No one is saying that the OP's actions were'nt caring, but what is the point of us micro chipping our animals if people will just bury them without a trip to the nearest vets to scan it.
My cat went missing several years ago for 10 days, i was distraught, out searching everyday, it was horrendous, if she had been hit by a car i would have had closure and could have dealt with it, it was the not knowing that was torture, due to her being chipped we got her back, if she'd died and and been buried without being scanned, i'd never have known and would still be hoping one day she'd come back......

I understand- that's why all of mine are chipped- however, that's why mine also have a collar and tag. I personally didn't see the point of chips at the beginning- as I said in a previous post-no one has a scanner to hand, except the vet.

This was a set of circumstances that probably don't often happen..ie night time, injuries sustained, and if she had had a collar, I would have not hesitated to contact the owner.

I got mine chipped because one of mine (Baldrick) went missing for 10 months-he's a sod at getting his collar off. He lived like a feral cat that whole time- until the CPL found him, and advertised. That convinced me to chip them all, so that if it happened again, they'd scan him. Yes, I was frantic when he went missing-I don't sleep if one of my lot are out all night (to be honest me or my partner sleep downstairs until we hear them coming in)- but accepted that if cats are out- sometimes they'll go missing.

And yes- I have lost one in these circumstances..
Ruaridh Armstrong-missing since 05/11/11. Come home old boy-we miss you x

So yes I have every right to be annoyed.

Next time the owner may not be so understanding. I certainly wouldn't be.

I wouldn't think very much of a person who thought it was ok to get shirty with someone who did what the OP did. Talk about no good deed goes unpunished!

Why is it so important to you to have your cat with you in death if you let it roam freely while its alive?

What would you all be thinking of the OP if she had just left the cat at the side of the road for all to see? I'm sure you'd be saying other things about her,

As long as the owner of the cat is happy what is the problem?

Surely if you were that bothered about your cat you'd also have a collar on it instead of expecting someone to pick up the dead carcass of your pet and take it to a vet I for one wouldn't as I can't stomach the sight of blood.

    Good on you OP

    Steph xx
  • Ideally, yes the cat should have been taken to the vet to be scanned, but this must have been an extremely upsetting situation and we don´t always do the ideal thing when distressed. At least OP cared enough to treat the poor thing with some dignity.

lets not turn this into an argument, we have differences of opinions and as a cat owner myself, whos cat does like going outside, this is the kind of thing you have to expect as a worst case scenario

my beebs is chipped and i stand by the op and what they did, if the vet was closed i would understand that they would want to bury a cat instead of leaving it somewhere where it is obviously in a really bad state or condition

i dont know about other peoples locals vets but round here they open at hours that i would only be able to attend on a weekend for a couple of hours

it doesnt mean i love my cat any less, he gets the best care, love and food, better than myself and my partner lol, utterly spoilt, but hes happy, happy going outside and i made him happy and im happy and would be happy with what the op did

I had a cat go missing and rang all vets the works. I had put up posters etc and got a few people ring up quite certain was my cat on pics. Unfortuatly they were busy going to work setc. The people who took her into country and left in a box. I am dissapointed as they cant remeber where so ill never know fro certain.

I am gutted if only i had a collar on or the people took to a vet , cats protection etc, anything but buried it. I agree with most post should of been took somewhere as mine was chipped what a waste of time it was though.

I am sorry but I mentioned i wasnt to happy with action they took, i dont agree with burying the cat as people could of been ring round everywhere trying to see if been broght in id never off known myself if hadnt put lots poster up.

My cat was 2 and had her from kitten and has affected me purly to not knowing for sure, partly my fault she wouldnt wear a collar and didnt try her again when got older. Not all cats tolerate them easily. the person son who left it wont tell me wher eor forgot so may get community place to ask them as i feel it my right bury it or see if can identify it.

I dont think people realise the effect not knowing can have on people. I still belive cats as should be free to roam and accept was a risk but my cats like outdoors

i dont see whats so bad about leaving it in a box one night and taking it in next day, I now have collars on my other cats so this type thing cannot happen again

I think what poster did was a nice gesture but i still feel upset i wouldnt of known and did wish was taken to vet as would of known same day :( Id still rather see minerottin in the box and know for sure was mine i could move on better then.

Op - you did what was right for the situation, you have found the owner and they are happy.

Like previous posters have said, it depends if you have an out of hours vet. We are lucky enough to have an emergency vets down the road which is open from 7pm. Obviously, I would've took the cat down there to be scanned, but in your situation this wasn't possible and you couldn't keep hold of the cat in the state it was in.

I remember when my Cindy died, it happened early in the morning (she just passed away peacefully, no road traffic accident or anything). It was the school holidays and hubby had to go off to work, so I had to keep the cat in the carrier hidden away in the shed away from the kids, until hubby got home from work and the kids were in bed, so we could dig the hole in the garden. Funny thing is, I even popped into the shed a couple of times to see her, as if I was expecting her to still be alive

Don't beat yourself up about it OP - it's nice to see kind and compassionate people like you where animals are concerned, there are not many of you about. xxx

I found my cat today, wanted to know. Her face was quite decomposed couldnt tell from that as jaw etc was gone and legs were bad but still made her out ok from paws, ears, head shape etc but surpirsingly intact still all body and fur still there. Shame i had see her rotting but had to know. If they reported to police or anyone id found much sooner proberly within few days. I recognised the paws and shape, tail etc couldt dig around to much as side laying of was pretty juicy :(. I am satisfied is mine though now where as wasnt sure before. I hope i dont keep remembering how she looked after being dead 4 weeks.
