Sazzybum you did what you could and the right thing, dont forget you were upset as well, the cats owner now knows what happened to her cat without finding it in such a state or the council taking it away without her knowing, not everyone are animal lovers and many may have left it, the owner now knows and thats the main thing.0

If you have a cat that you let roam you have to accept that a consequence of your decision is that one day your cat may disappear and you will never know what happened. That's just life with an outdoor cat, you decide if its worth it or not.
My intention is not to make the OP feel guilty, my intention is to make people think before they just go and bury the cat. My cat has a microchip for the situation if she gets lost or killed. I would like that microchip to be used so I can be reunited with my cat. So yes I have every right to be annoyed.
My cat has been missing before, luckily she had found herself a way into my (locked!) garage and got stuck. She was only missing overnight but I couldn't sleep that night because it was not like her to not come home for food. If something bad had happened then I would've wanted to call my vet and they say yeah she is here. Otherwise I would have just worried for weeks until eventually I would have had to give up on her coming home.
Whatever state the cat is in, I would have put her in a box and dealt with the vets in the morning. That is where they should go. The other posters shouldn't just say you did the right thing, oh it must have been so traumatic blah blah blah so they don't offend the OP. Burying the cat in the garden is the wrong decision. I know at the time people may make wrong decisions because it isn't nice to see a dead cat but people should think first, this is what microchips are for. You were lucky to find the owner, what if the owner hadn't seen your notices and been worried and hoping for weeks because the vet hadn't called her because of the microchip.
I'm sorry OP, yes it may have been traumatic for you but you did the wrong thing. Next time the owner may not be so understanding. I certainly wouldn't be. Yes I'd be glad the council hadn't taken it away but I would want the cat to be with me not in some stranger's garden.0 -
There was a similar thread a couple of months ago and I'll say the same as I said there.
I know it was well intentioned and everything but I would have been extremely annoyed if you had buried my cat. She is microchipped and I would have been worrying about her when you could have just taken her to the vet and I would have known straight away. Plus I would have wanted to bury her in my own garden or cremation to keep her near.
If my cat is ever in that situation then I hope that someone will take her to the vet. Leaving them out in the road is worse but being buried somewhere else is only slightly better.
I have to say i agree with this post entirely, if it was my cat, i would want to see her to say goodbye, my children would want to say goodbye and we would want her in our garden in her favourite spot. I can't understand why you did'nt wrap the cat in an old towel and place it in a box until the morning......0 -

Possibly. But would you have wanted me to keep your cat in a box in the garden for 12 hours?? Nearly decapitated, with open wounds all over? Really?
Sorry- but no. If it had been daytime- it would have been a different scenario, and yes I would have been straight to the vet.Ruaridh Armstrong-missing since 05/11/11. Come home old boy-we miss you x

As I have explained in a previous post, it's injuries were severe. If I had put her in a box in the garden, God knows what would have got to her by the morning. (I live in the country).
I'm sorry, but even I was horrified..I honestly, honestly don't think you would have let your children see her.
Anyhow.. thanks to all who have helped me in this.Ruaridh Armstrong-missing since 05/11/11. Come home old boy-we miss you x

I think you are making excuses now, do you not have a garage or shed to have kept the cat overnight and my older children are teenagers, myself and my husband would have judged if they would have been ok with seeing the cat, it was not your decision to make.0 -

That is your opinion- and you are entitled to it.
I don't know why I would look for an excuse to bury a strange little cat in my garden. There are many things I wish to do in my lifetime- that's not one of them. I wasn't being rude about you or your children- so don't get yourself agitated, I didn't know what ages they were.
Anyway- it's irrelevant now, as the owner is happy, and to be honest- that is all that matters to me.Ruaridh Armstrong-missing since 05/11/11. Come home old boy-we miss you x

A poor animal was killed the OP did the right thing (in my view) burrying the poor thing. I would have done the same. All that matters is the poor kitten wasnt left there for the birds and other wildlife to pick over.
Good on you sazzybum, others might have done nothing at all, at least you did what you thought was best. I for one will say thankyou for showing compassion to the poor kitten and then for trying your best to find the owner. Hands up how many of you would have done the same?RIP TJ. You are completely entitled to feel as you do but for me, your comments will be the reason why I will very likely walk on by if I ever find myself in the same position as the OP.
Oh and for the record, I wasn't trying to make the OP feel better, I genuinely thought her actions were caring. You cannot fault someone for that.Herman - MP for all!0 -
No one is saying that the OP's actions were'nt caring, but what is the point of us micro chipping our animals if people will just bury them without a trip to the nearest vets to scan it.
My cat went missing several years ago for 10 days, i was distraught, out searching everyday, it was horrendous, if she had been hit by a car i would have had closure and could have dealt with it, it was the not knowing that was torture, due to her being chipped we got her back, if she'd died and and been buried without being scanned, i'd never have known and would still be hoping one day she'd come back......0
