I agree. For what it's worth, if it were my cat, I would be comforted with the fact someone cared enough to not leave her on the road and had taken the time to bury her. If you'd taken her to the vet and no-one had asked after her, she would have been disposed of in a less caring way imo.

Thank you all. Made me feel a bit better about it :o

I called around again, but no one has asked after her so far.

This exactly sums up how I would feel in that situation.

And at least you've let as many relevant people know as possible. If it were my cat, I'd defnitely try ringing around all of the local vets and would check my local paper.

I'd be comforted to know that her body had been dealt with kindly by someone who cared enough to do something.

i think you did the right thing you could at the time, if it was my beebs i would have been grateful for you burying him with such love and care, as someone else has said though, make them post a notice at the vet and local animal shelter so if the owner goes looking there, they dont have to go on not knowing what happened to their cat

    thanks

    Bluebeary-I love your avatar! :)

Well, last night, a lady from the bottom of our street came over and said she was sure it was her kitten. She described it, and yes, it was hers. (as sure as we possibly can be-as she didn't want us to disturb her grave)

It hadn't been chipped, or spayed-and she hadn't seen it for a week or so-and she says she's so glad that at least now she knows what happened, and thanked us. We showed the lady where we buried her and she had a little cry. I told her she can go round anytime she wants.

Anyway, thanks all for the advice and support. :)

  • I hope that my cat found the same treatment from a kind soul when it went missing some years ago.

I suspect it got hit by traffic; but if I knew someone had done what the OP had done, I'd have appreciated it greatly and felt better too.

There was a similar thread a couple of months ago and I'll say the same as I said there.

I know it was well intentioned and everything but I would have been extremely annoyed if you had buried my cat. She is microchipped and I would have been worrying about her when you could have just taken her to the vet and I would have known straight away. Plus I would have wanted to bury her in my own garden or cremation to keep her near.

If my cat is ever in that situation then I hope that someone will take her to the vet. Leaving them out in the road is worse but being buried somewhere else is only slightly better.

I think you did the right thing. Years ago we had a cat of ours go missing and spent ages looking for her. Eventually someone down the road said a cat matching the description had been knocked over and the people threw her in the bin. I was absolutely devastated that someone could just throw a beloved pet away like rubbish. I would have been eternally grateful for someone like you to know that she had been given respect. At the end of the day it is all very well to say take it to the vets etc but reality is you did the best under the circumstances and it wasn't your responsibilty really to do anything. Since our loss we have always kept our cats indoors where they are safe and we don't need to worry about them being lost or run over. But you definately did the right thing, and at least the owner has been found now.

You would have no right to be annoyed, and I hope you don't succeed in making the OP feel guilty about her actions, which I assume is your intention.

If you have a cat that you let roam you have to accept that a consequence of your decision is that one day your cat may disappear and you will never know what happened. That's just life with an outdoor cat, you decide if its worth it or not.

Thank you once again. I may have felt guilty yesterday, but after talking to her owner- I dont any more.

What Olokia doesn't appreciate was that this cat was in a very bad state, nearly decapitated actually ( and I didn't want to put that before, because it was upsetting). Now-would you, hand on heart have left a cat like that for 12+hours until the vet opened? I certainly couldn't.

All my cats are chipped- but they are also collared/tagged, because nobody has a chip reader in their house (well none that I know anyway) and I'm paranoid I lose mine too, so cover every base. I just wanted that little cat to have the respect I would have for my own.
