Anything else I could've done?

Hi guys, wonder if you can help me..

Last night, about 9pm, we got a knock on our door-a couple of neighbourhood kids-telling us that they'd seen a silver stripey cat being knocked down. We have 5 cats-and CeeCee is silver striped, so my partner flew out the door-without checking first that CeeCee was in the cupboard (her spot).

He came back with this poor kitten in his arms (thankfully not CeeCee-she was snoring happily in her duvet), which had obviously passed on. :(:(

It was all bloody, with it's head...well you get the picture. I didn't know the kitten, but I started crying anyway-poor wee mite.

He didn't want to leave it in the road for other cars to hit her-nor leave her at the side of the road for the council to pick up in the morning-goodness knows how long that would have been. We buried her in the back garden because we couldn't leave her like that.

I have put a message on FaceBook, and I will ring the vet, and CPL as well this morning in case anyone is looking for her. She wasn't wearing a collar, and there wasn't one around where she died. Is there anything I haven't thought of? We couldn't take a picture of her because of the state she was in. I just feel dreadful for the owner(if she had one) not knowing what happened to her.

Sorry for this being so long.:o

  • Poor you and poor cat. But probably should have taken the cat to a veterinary surgery as they could have checked for a microchip.
Comp wins 2014 - manual of dermatology (!), afternoon tea for my place of work, scrub top, BBQ and organic meat pack.:D

I did think about that Liz, thanks for the reply- but it was 9pm and the vet is only open in my small town from 9-6.

I phoned the SSPCA(Scotland) but since the cat was dead, and not injured- they said there was nothing they could do..I'm afraid they're never very helpful at the best of times :(

  • Poor cat. But why didn't you put her in a box and take her to the vet in the morning?
Not your to bury and she may have had a chip.

I did think of that QQO, but I just didn't like the thought of her lying exposed all night, especially the state she was in.

I know you're right-and I probably shouldn't have gone with what my first 'knee jerk' reaction was. Believe me- I do feel bad about it-hence the post. I'll be phoning the vet at 9am and the Cat Protection League to tell them about it. We've wrapped her up so if they ask me to get her out and bring her in-I'll do it.

I honestly did not want to appear heartless at all, and I'm sorry if I've offended people.

  • I really think you should go and dig her up and take her to the vet.

I don't think you need to dig her up, that would be pretty traumatic for the OP as it sounds like the poor cat was in a pretty broken state, and the cat may not eve be chipped. Unfortunately people who have cats that they let out just have to accept the possibility that they might not come home one night and you never know what happened.

I think an announcement at the local vets, local websites/paper and lost pet websites describing the cat and letting the owners know that it was buried with care and respect is enough.

Don't beat yourself up OP, you did more than most would.
  • I do agree that the ideal thing would've been to take the cat to the vet to check for a chip .... but, what's done is done.

As Person_one says, if you can let the local vets know etc then the owner should hopefully be found/contacted (it's terrible when you don't know what's happened - thinking they're lying injured somewhere for days on end is IMHO worse than knowing they've died as at least you know they aren't suffering)

    Thank you Person_One, really-thank you.

I have called the vet-and they said they haven't heard anything yet, ditto the CPL. They also both said to leave her where she is. I also called the council- because they were the first ones I phoned when I lost one of mine a while back-and they have taken note of everything, just in case the owner(if there is one) calls them.

The local paper will put an advert in very reasonably (about a fiver), but it doesn't come out until next Tuesday-I put it in anyway.

    Thanks all

There's a few websites online for lost pets, and some specifically for cats. I posted some found cats up (alive ones) that appeared in our garden one day - we live in the middle of fields so it was very unusual for them to appear! I posted up general descriptions and then people sent in photos to me for me to confirm whether they were their cats or not.
Personally I would have taken the body to the vets - they'll have freezers for the purpose and could let potential owners ID the cat/take it home to bury but what's done is done.
I'm not sure I'd post an ad in the paper but alert vets, petshops and pounds in the surrounding areas - cats can stray a distance so I'd go with a radius of several towns.

Please dont beat yourself up over this, you did what you thought best and the poor little kittie at peace now. Had it been my kitten I would have been in bits but happy knowing some one cared enough to help.

Hindsight is wonderful but at the time when you are upset it goes out of the window.

    RIP little kitty xxx
