Halifax Bank debt

Some people on these boards have warned me to change my bank as my partner has a debt of £6000 with the Halifax(with Payplan)

My question is will Halifax really take my salary to pay off my partners debts or is it something they could do but very rarely do?
As anyone ever suffered this?

I dont think its right if they did this as although it would be from a joint account it would actually be my money.

  • Yes if from a joint account - as it looks like her money in that account

Banks can't distinguish what is in an account because it is a joint account and therefore belongs technically to both people, so they could take it. Have your money paid into your own account or open a new joint account which isn't a Halifax one (or one linked to them in any way).

Section 6.2 (When we can take money out of your account)of their conditions states

"If any money is overdue for payment on any other account you have with us, whether in your sole name or in joint names; we may take the money you owe us out of your account; If your account is a joint account we will only do this if the overdue debt is also on a joint account held by the same people.
We can do this without giving you notice"

I read that to mean they wont take my salary out of our joint account as the debt is solely in my partners name.
    Any one agree or disagree?
  • Hmm! touch and go - not sure

Is she keeping up with her arrangement? if so then doubt they attempt it

well, she obviously owes them several months loan payments, so she as sent it to payplan with other debts but this is a recent event
  • Hopefully this will get sorted for her
