Did you really not know that prior to the credit crunch?

Far, far more complex than a one line answer.

Problem is there are no votes to be won buy telling people that the solution to their debt problems was to not borrow in the first place.

You're probably right. Dave's above trying to blame other people for the mess we're in.

All a bit silly really isn't it.

All about votes again. Can't say what simply needs to be said for fear of losing votes.

It's more than a bit silly - it is amongst the most economically illiterate ideas ever. While it may be a good idea individually to pay off you credit card, if everyone does it, deflation and depression are simply inevitable.

More than likely, it sounded like a good idea to the party faithful, a bit like Thatchers "housewife economics".
Running an economy is nothing like running a household budget - however.

Add to the fact the sickening rank hypocrisy of a multi millionaire telling us poor saps to tighten their belt - while his city mates are feasting on quails tongue washed down with Krug.

No one (in the UK) can strike a ball like Rooney, or hit a forehand like Murray, but I could pick half a dozen past & present posters with a better grasp of economics than Dave & Gideon.

Turns out that Dave's heavily previewed speech has been rewritten.

Apparently, his advisers, after some reconsideration thought that a millionaire PM telling the nation to pay off their credit card debts might make him look like an out of touch t**t.

I heard that on the BBC news, now he's apparently going to say something along the lines of

"People are paying down their debts which is good and that people who do have disposable income should have the confidence to spend to help the economy."

Which if he does say the above is really neither here or there in meaning.

As for making him look out of touch, I think many people's already got that idea before he even stands up to make the speech.

I miss the good old days when the media would report what people said or did rather than what they planned to say or do.

    Life was so simple then.

I think credit cards are an unnecessary evil and should be banned. Would never have one again.
Ah, its all about money management and living WITHIN your means and paying in FULL every month. Basically if you don't have the money in your account to pay for it now, then you cant afford it - so do not purchase on your credit card, simple really !

I paid off my debts ages ago (not that I had many).
Excellent move DP in clearing your debts, we only have mortgage debt that remains but reduces every month.

I tried to not spend tomorrow's wages today. I preferred to save some of today's wages in case tomorrow's wages didn't arrive. That plan seems to have been a good one. Pity some countries didn't adopt that idea.
