Tax and NI when working under 16 hrs per wk

Hi, can anyone help me please?
I've had a look on the HMRC website but can't find the answer. I've recently been employed on a part time basis, working variable hours (less than 10 per week). My understanding was that as I was not earning enough to pay tax and NI then these would not be stopped from my wages. The amount of pay received for August was £82.90 down and my manager tells me it will be due to stoppages and that I will get these deducted and then get a tax rebate at the end of the year? Is this right? From £274 earned, I've had £82.90 stopped? Just doesn't seem worth working if this is the case (as I need the money now, not at the end of the year!).
Many thanks

Is this a second job? What's the tax code they have used?:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Hi
It's my only job....the tax code is 747L.
Thanks0 -
Then the amounts are too low for any tax or NI to be deducted.sunday_girl wrote: »Hi

Thanks for your replies, I've now been able to speak to somebody in payroll and they have explained what's happened this month (a bit convoluted but I will get the money I am missing back next month) but am pleased to know that on a normal month I shouldn't be deducted for tax and NI.0

I assume that they said they had made the deductions because they were waiting for your coding notice from HMRC? This is normal when you start a new job, even if you submit a P45. Usually you will find there is an automatic repayment of the overpaid tax through your wages in the next few weeks.0

It's a lot for them to take even if waiting for a proper tax code, but if you're going to get it back there's no problem.0

You do realise that if you are not earning enough to pay NI, you are not building up any entitlement to a state pension?0
