I have never run a small business but I would imagine if I did I did for example sell blinds or whatever I would think about what was forecast for the economy as well how my business was doing before deciding whether to borrow to buy a new van or whatever - then again may be I waste too much time on here...

It is in reality to help businesses that have demand, but not the means to borrow in the current climate.
It won't help anyone who's business is not in demand etc.
But it will help plenty of SME's who's growth is restricted by restricted credit.

So if you made blinds, and were turning down order because you can't afford to grow at such a fast rate because of cash flow for new stock staff etc it would be a great help to be able to borrow to fund your growth.

If you had little orders and just needed a van it is very unlikely to help, and most probably not the kind of thing the policy is made for.

SME's usually borrow based on personal performance rather than what they think the economy will do.
Many companies, blue chips and SME's grow in recessions (and fail) if they did not use the time to invest when in demand they fall behind their competitors.
Company growth can be very much about a good business model rather than the state of the general economy.

    So if you made blinds....

The regional Bishop was coming to visit a small local
convent out in the country and the nuns were all excited...

The Mother Superior took two of the younger nuns aside
and assigned them to paint the room where the Bishop would be staying

"You must be finished painting, cleaned up and ready for the reception when
    the Bishop arrives."

After the Mother Superior leaves and they're surveying the room
one of the young nuns says... "We'll never be able to finish painting
and still have time to get cleaned up for the reception, what are we going to do?"

The other nun says, "I've got an idea. How about if we take off our
clothes and just work in our panties so when we get finished all we'll
have to do is put our clothes back on and go down to the reception."

The first nun quickly agrees, so they strip down to their panties and
start painting. As they're working hurriedly to finish painting, there's a knock at the door. One of the nuns peers through the peep hole and sees a tall man wearing dark glasses holding a box in his arms.

    "Who is it?" she asks.

"It's the blind man" came the reply. "The Mother Superior sent me."

The other nun says, "If we have to get dressed now we're never
going to finish on time". The first nun replies, "Look, he's blind so
he won't see anything if we let him in and we can get right back to
work". The second nun agrees and they open the door.

The blind man brings the box into the room and stands motionless
for a moment. Finally he says, "Nice boobs ladies, now where do
    you want the blinds?"

I believe dave and george are cooking up a scheme to lend money directly to SMEs; presumbly they will borrow the money themselves first

Just look at the council tax freeze. It was reported that this would save £72 per household. However, the government will fund councils by way of compensation to the tune of £800m which came from a whitehall 'underspend'.

Do this pair think we are stupid? Hasn't the government simply taken on another £72 of debt per household? I would have thought it better not to spend the £800m in the first place and tell councils to freeze council tax anyway and find appropriate savings.

Interesting article from Stephanie Flanders, especially in light of the UK retaining its AAA rating:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-15150162

"You might have missed it: there's been a lot going on lately. But the UK is back on top.

The government's economic policies over the past year have made it the envy of the free world.

No, I'm not paraphrasing Mr Osborne's speech at the Conservative Party conference.

In fact, party conferences are not a great demonstration of my point. But you have to admit, the more you look at the way the US and the eurozone have confronted their economic problems lately, the better the UK looks."

I've asked a couple of times now, but you must have missed it. ;)

I know you think that the present crisis is the fault of the housing bulls but how why do you hold me responsible for the Greeks spending well beyond their means?
