Warranties for white goods are they really worth it?

Does anyone actually pay the money for these things?:D I mean I've just recently bought a Hotpoint Tumble dryer for £160 at Comet & the sales guy was trying to flog me a warranty for £60 a third of the price of the tumble dryer  He then went on 'well it's a £90 call out charge from Hotpoint if anything goes wrong' :D

I said 'listen bonny lad it has a 1 year warranty & by law I'm covered for 6 years by the sales of goods act & if it goes kaput after 6 years I'll simply say well I've had my moneys worth I'll go & buy a new tumble dryer!':D

I mean it logical really, I bought a cheap LG fridge freezer & a cheap indisit washer 5 years back & they're still going strong if it suddenly packs in then I'll just toddle make to Comet & Currys and buy a new one. Why would anyone want to take out a warranty for then pay for an extra call out charge that would equate to the same as buying the appliance brand new! They must think we're all stupid! :D

I agree with you completely, i think the electrical stores make most of the profit on the warranty, i always tell salesman that my brother in law, son, father etc is a repairman, that way they stop pressuring me to buy the warranty.

We've never had and we have never had an appliance go in 8 years or so, still got the same fridge and freezer we got form iceland, the dishwasher all bought 8 years ago which are still working, even though the d/washer baskets have seen better days and im not sure if the fridge is working as it should be.
  • I know it's their job & they probably on comision to sell it but to me it's like flogging a dead horse. You'd have to be either really rich or really dopey to take one of these things out! :D

some people buy the cover for piece of mind and others buy it without knowing the item is covered for a year anyway.
  • Yeah but under the sales of goods act you have a 6 year warranty courtesy of the government & it's free!

Warranties are generally not worth the money, hence the hard-sell. I think the worst I've ever been offered was an £87 one year warranty on a £90 vacuum cleaner. !!!!!!?? I'm able to easily withstand the pressure from sales assistant trying to push these pointless policies; I feel annoyed on behalf of those that aren't. Makes me cross that people are taken advantage of.

  • I was asked if I wanted extra cover on a lampshade once. I asked what colour it would be. He didn't get it.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

I bought 3 pairs of silver earrings from Argos for the princely sum of £7.99. I was asked if I wanted an extended guarantee for £3.99. I just laughed out loud!

I think it's pretty much taken as read that these things aren't worth the paper that they're written on. "Watchdog" did a report recently showing how often they are "missold" and often the staff don't even know what is covered by the policy. When I bought my gas cooker, 15 years ago, I was offered a policy to cover against "accidental damage, breakdowns and theft". I told the assistant that these type of cookers rarely break down, I had accidental damage cover with my home insurance and, let's face it, how many burglars really steal gas cookers? When I did get burgled, the thief, not surprisingly, made off with my CD player, my video recorder and my jewellery. I don't suppose he could get through the window with my gas cooker too!
