Building Society Cash Deposits

Hi all, new to this so bear with me!
Just had an instance whereby i paid £50 into my daughters building society account, but to my great surprise the cashier had entered £500 in!
No forms were signed, but yesterday had a letter stating her account would have restrictions on until we phoned up the Building Society as they had found an error in cashing up. No values were metnioned & presume they are contacting all people who paid in cash on that day.
What are the chances of me getting caught if i claim to have paid in £500, as other than CCTV i cannot see how they can prove.
Or, should i own up, & if so am i entitled to any compensation for their error?
Your thoughts please!!!

Sure the building society made a mistake, but the cashier concerned is probably under suspicion for misappropriating the funds in question.
You are clearly aware of the error and are therefore complicit in the act of false accounting.
Your conscience should guide you on this one, not this forum.0 -
Just something someone said in work for the inconvenience in having to sort out.
Hardly my fault that she couldn't count - have probably done the Building Society a favour in highlighting her inadequacies!
& who else feels sorry for the banks & building societies, & has never been overcharged on their accounts?:A0 -
Considering the fact that if you claim you paid in £500 and there is no way they can prove otherwise, the cashier may loose his/her job... would you feel proud that you had dishonestly put this person out of work?? What if that person were your daughter and some dishonest person had done that to her leaving her unemployed with a possible criminal record.. would you just think "oh well, that's done her a favour highlighting the fact that she's stupid" ...when in fact the cashier in question clearly miskeyed the value (no a case of adding up wrong at all!) or even more probably.. maybe the zero key on the keyboard is faulty!!
Grow up... own up! You aren't playing with the banks you are playing with a person's life and livelihood

Having at one point in my life worked in a bank, and been in that situation, I would have hoped that the customer in question would own up to the error. (They did)
Obviously you are perfect and have never made a mistake in your life.
As for compensation, you're having a laugh - compensation is for people who have been seriously wronged, not people who are the "victim" of an honest mistake - would you have pointed out the cashiers error if she had only credited £5 instead of £50?
Do the right thing and let them know about it.Wha's like us - damn few, an' they're a' deid

No, they've contacted you .... and it will only be you. So better to talk to them rather than attempt to increase the 'compensation' by factoring in the time spent on seeking advice here! :rolleyes:If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

What inconvenience is it to you in the grand scheme of things? Have you suffered trauma or sleepless nights? Anxiety attacks perhaps?
Everyone makes mistakes....apart from you it would seem.
Take your chances by claiming you paid in £500.....go on....i dare you! Lets see what happens

Gave him the benefit of at least that doubt ... but you're probaby right. There's a lot of them about at the moment.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
