Sewing Machine - what to buy?

I am sick and tired of my old Toyota sewing machine - I spend longer coaxing it along than I ever do sewing. So I've decided to treat myself to a new machine. I make lots of gifts and home furnishings so it will be moneysaving in the end!
So - can anyone reccommend a good quality machine that will be very easy to use, reliable and good tempered? The mystery of tension (apart from the tension headache I get trying to set it up) has always been my biggest bugbear, so if a machine exists that has an easy way to cope and take the guess work out of changing tension for different fabrics and projects that would be my first and highest priority.
Other than that I would like a variety of stitch types (as I like to do applique and decorative quilting), a hard cover and easy bobbin winding.
I've been told that Janome and Brother are probably the best, but will consider anything.
I have a budget of £300 ish, I would prefer to spend less if I can but could actually stretch it a little further for the right machine.
Thanks for any advice you can offer both on machine models and best place to buy.
