I've put on a stone!!

Hi guys... my first post in this area of the forums, but could do with a shoulder or 50 to cry on! :o Also, it's an excuse to have a little rant.

Over the past month, if not longer, I've been trying to watch what I eat and even going for the odd jog or two in the evening (though this is some thing I need to work on much harder as most of the time I just want to get in and do nothing...boo)!

I hate scales at the best of times, but this weekend I decided to clean the whole of my bathroom so moved every thing out of there. It was then that I thought "what the heck" and weighed myself... big mistake! :( I've now put on a stone in weight so feeling rather glum about the whole thing.

So this got me thinking, that I need to definitely do some thing about this. I don't think of myself as fat, but would really like to loose this extra stone if not another one to go with it before Christmas. I'd like to start working out, but find that I've joined gyms in the past and generally don't go after the first week - i know I'm not the only one like that. :)

What do you guys generally eat during the week/weekend? And how do you exercise...? I usually have the following:

Breakfast: 1 x coffee, semi skimmed milk and half a tea spoon of sugar. 9am: Monday-Friday, I'll have another cup of coffee once I get into work.

Mid morning: Breakfast bar or a piece of fruit (apple, or banana)

Lunch: granola and low fat plain yoghurt or a sandwich, with a packet of plain crisps as a treat (though I did have a McDonalds on Friday... ssshhhh, don't tell the other half!!). :o

Mid afternoon: Piece of fruit

Dinner: Can be a selection of any thing... usually involving fresh veg. Could be a frozen chicken breast, or fish from the oven. Try to cook fresh/from scratch when possible. I work Friday and Monday nights though so usually just have a microwave meal as it's quick and easy.

I don't exercise enough, I know that... though I have been going for the odd jog here and there.

Is there anyone out there who wants to be my fitness buddy? :D

Any suggestions would be a great help, or any diets that anyone is aware of that I could try...

You haven't put what you eat for breakfast there, you only mention a coffee?

Do you have sugar in all your coffee/tea?

If so, add up how many you have per day and work out how many spoonfuls of sugar you are having a day. It might surprise you (I know it did me! :o)

Have breakfast and cut the breakfast bar at coffee time.

Check out what is in your microwave meal, there are often a lot of "extras" such as sugar fats and salt.

Why not do your own micro meals? Batch cook and potion up servings, then when you need them just microwave. I do this with stews and other things I've made in the slow cooker. HM meals for days you can't be bothered with cooking.

Are you sure your scales are accurate and giving a true reading?

Sometimes scales don't like being moved/repositioned.

If I had put a stone on in a month, it wouldn't be a surprise, I would be able to see it coming as I could feel it in my clothes and by looking in the mirror, especially if as you say you are not very overweight to start with.

Good idea with bulk cooking also, and that is some thing that I do already (stews, home made curry and chilli).

I realise that scales shouldn't be moved, and that you need to weigh yourself on a solid, flat surface but yup... a stone difference! Maybe I should start keeping a 'blog' of what I eat and drink throughout the day and then I could see if there is some thing in my diet that is a no-go area.

Thanks for the response guys ;)

    Always eat breakfast :)

Not just a bowl of cornflakes, something filling (and warm when winter comes) you will function so much better.
2 toast with either something like
    egg and tomato
    beans and mushrooms.
Or a bowl of porridge with a banana.
make sure you know your belly has food in it before you leave the house.

Have you heard of 'starvation mode'? (Google it if not)

Most of what you eat is good, do you drink plenty of water?

    You should eat breakfast,

You answered your own question really, 'I dont excersise enough' is spot on. You are eating more than your body needs so it just turns what it doesnt need into fat. The odd jog or two, you might as well not bother.
You have to do it regularly.

My husband had to stop working (manual) because of sight problems but he ate the same things mealwise, within a year his waist was
ballooning out of control. Smaller portions, new diet and most of all more excercise saw him sorted, back to normal in 6 months.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Whilst this is a basic fact, the OP has not divulged their weight/height/age, there is no way of knowing over an internet site what is right for anyone without the correct assessment.

I've said before on this site, some people under-eat - but all the wrong foods - which the body stores as fat, the body goes into starvation mode, metabolism decreases and the body retains water and fat. So sometimes it's not as straightforward as calories in/calories out.

The consensus re. breakfast bars in correct. Contrary to their marketing the majority are high G.I., high sugar, high in salt, additives and fat retaining chemicals. The ingredient listings are as long as your arm and should be avoided completely.
  • Hi, You asked in your post if there were any diets anyone could recommend . Look at the Dukan diet forum online and read about people's experiences . I've been following this eating plan for a good few weeks and modified it a little . Finding that I'm able to eat healthily and maintain my weight loss too. Good Luck .
