Advice dealing with EquiDebt and Statute Barred debt

I have received a letter from Equidebt stating that I owe some money to a creditor so I phoned them up as I didn't recognise them & thought it was a mistake!
They said it was an outstanding debt back in 2000 for a store card which had been taken on by a creditor in 2002 who had then passed it on to Equidebt.
The woman on the phone said that I would get a discount if I paid the o/s balance & she quoted me from £460.39(said debt) down to £320.00 and even more if I sorted this out asap.
I remember having the card but can't recall as to whether there was any outstanding balance or not and was wondering how I stand on this & how they can keep giving me a reduction on the said debt!? Does this mean they're just making the amount up?
Feel very confused - Can anyone help!!!!?:think:0 -

I just wanted to follow this up to see what happened. the same thing is happening to my husband - who had debts that were resolved back in 1999. I now do all the finances and there have been no outstanding debts at all - I've been advised to ignore them and post letter back 'not at this address' - just wondered what was the outcome with you. Thanks Jlusciouslynnieloo45 wrote: »I have received a letter from Equidebt stating that I owe some money to a creditor so I phoned them up as I didn't recognise them & thought it was a mistake!

I have had lots of phone calls, knocks on the door and letters from this company. They are trying to collect a very old debt which is nothing at all to do with me.
They are the latest in a series of debt collectors trying to collect this debt. I thought it had been resolved when I established with the bank concerned that the debt wasn't mine, to stop the constant calls, but apparently, these debts just get sold on further down the food chain.
The company has been extremely threatening. When I told them that I would be making a complaint to the FSA and OFT about their harassment they responded that it was now a police matter and I would be prosecuted for wasting police time. They still respond with letters and calls.
After one firm but polite attempt to put them in the picture I ignore them, but it gets very trying to have to keep putting the phone down on them.0
