How do I track them down?

Hi all,

Now I do apologise for all the questions below, however...I am SO confused! I have just found myself an independent financial adviser who is going to help me sort through the mess, but first I need to find out who I owe money to and how much as the "burying head in sand" technique has left me with no clue!

Recently I had a clear out of all my uni work, and I think somewhere along the line I threw out a lot of my old debt paperwork.

These debts are from 2003, most defaulted in 2006 when my ex left me and I couldn't afford to pay any further.

I have some paperwork, and some information on my credit report...though oddly the creditors on my credit report are not the ones chasing me for money (bar one). The creditors chasing me are also not on my credit report, so I'm a bit confused about that one too. I thought that all bad debt goes onto your credit report? Is there another credit report company I can used to cross reference all the information I have?

So how do I go about finding who I owe money to? Do I need to start with the original creditor and work forwards, or start with the last known debt "owner" and track back. Also how do I know that these companies are telling the truth? I don't want to start paying debts off to companies that don't own the debt anymore!

pheewwww sorry again for all the questions, just trying to sort through the mess!

Firstly I would say a financial advisor will charge, and from the age of your debts it could well be that they are either statute barred or will be very soon.
I would suggest that if they are not listed on your credit reports then you should be careful how you reply to letters you are being sent so that you don't admit the debt, but look in the template letters here and there is a prove it letter that you can send.
How long ago did you last pay or admit the debts? that will help people who know more than me to help you.

    Hi Susie,

Yes I've paid a very experienced litigator 2 x £20 per hour of peopleperhour.com to give me some advice. It was actually before I realised this forum existed so I might as well utilise it now.

ok so looking statute barred means they can't chase the debt after the 6 year time frame after the LAST payment? I was paying small amounts till January 2010 so I'm guessing that this means I'm still within that 6 year time frame?

Here's whats on my credit report:

    Lloyds credit card £2861 - started 16/07/2003 default: 19/02/2011
    Ace mail order £248 - started 10/12/2002 default: 01/10/2006
    Studio mail order £430 - started 27/10/2003 default: 29/10/2006
Aktiv Kapital credit card £1059 - started 08/05/2003 default 28/11/2005
Capquest bank (i'm sure it was a credit card) £353 - started 20/03/2003 default 12/07/2006
Arrow Global (don't know who this is?) mail order could be next directory) £1133 started on 02/07/2003 defaulted on 12/05/2006
Raphael's bank - this is a weird one as it says satisfactory updated to 11/09/2011 but I don't have any credit cards though I think it might be monument looking at the amount.
