any advice?
Well if Lunns say it hasnt been devalued why do you believe it has?
I would imagine a ring is valued based on the stone, carats or whatever, and that judgement is made by the valuer. I don't imagine that they value it based on the hallmark, otherwise everyone would start stamping in hallmarks to increase the value of an item....0 -
well the hallmark dates it accurately and gives a place of origin surely this makes it more valuable than a reproduction ring which looks exactly the same with no hall mark?love you lots like jelly tots

ok got this email form a local jewellers but they cannot give me an amount that it has been devalued by
"Normally if the hallmark is removed from a ring during sizing etc it is not a problem because most rings are not that old and can be re-hallmarked, however due to the age of this ring and unusual hallmark it will devalue the ring in terms of its antique value. "love you lots like jelly tots

My best advice is to put all your feelings down in writing addressed to the manager and/or owner of the shop you entrusted your ring to.
State the facts and the problem.
State what you want in return (do you want an apology? compensation - if so how much etc)
Ask for a reply within a certain time period.
keep copies of anything you send.
See what response you get.
*if you are very unhappy and worried about your ring I would pay the money just to get it out of there then worry about getting a refund or whatever - but thats a personal thing*

I can't promise that all my replies will illicit this responser.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!

going in today to pick it utake it to get valued.
also giving them a photo of the hallmark and this strongly worded letter
As you are aware, I attended at your premises on the 9th January to obtain a quote as to how much it would cost to downsize my engagement ring. At no time did I authorise any member of your staff to have this carried out and indeed had insisted that no works be carried out until I was made aware of the price. It was only when I telephoned on 15th January 2007 that I was advised that the works had been carried out and I was advised that it would cost me £18.
As I have advised you on 17th January 2007, this ring was a 1930's Austro-Hungarian ring. This ring was highly sentimental and of considerable age and heritage. The hallmark that was clearly evident to the naked eye, as shown in the attached photo, is no longer visible as a result of the treatment that it sustained whilst in your premises or those of your servants or agents. I believe that this has devalued the ring and will have the ring revalued shortly.
p so i can
As already stated, at no time did I give my authorisation for any works to be carried out to my ring. I will therefore pay this fee of £18, under protest, in order to have my ring returned to me for further investigation. If the ring is found to be devalued, I will seek compensation for the damage that has been caused to my ring as well as recouping the additional valuation charge and the charge for resizing my ring.

hi got it back. its so bad looking i could have done a better job of resizing it. u can see a big discouloured line where they have chopped the bit out and not replted it lmao!!
anyway in answer to ur question. i have no free time and ahvent ahd a chance to get it valued but shall be taqking ti to get valued on wednesday so hopefully we will see. the guy i am taking it to says that if the hallmark has been removed there is no question that it has been devalued as there is no proof of origin or date but we will see the actual value he places on it.love you lots like jelly tots
