keeping receipts

Hi

Do you keep shop receipts and if you do, how long do you keep them for?

Also, do you keep all receipts like Tesco's, petrol station receipts, etc.

Thank you.

I check them before leaving the shop and then keep them until they tally with the credit card billing.

Also worth keeping for perishables which could be off before their use by date.

If you pay cash, then it depends on the item, with petrol you would probably soon know if there was anything wrong with it

yes, good idea about perishables. I bought a jar of peanut butter a few weeks back, opened it recently and it clearly did not taste good (never happened to me before). Luckily I managed to find tesco receipt from 2-3 weeks ago and they refunded me 52p. It is no biggie, but it felt nice (and fair).

I usually keep clothes and shoes receipts for a month, in case I need to return the goods. But, say, if you wear something and then it falls apart in the first couple of months or so. As a general rule, how long have you got since the time of purchase to go back and refudn/ exchange, etc?

    Thank you.

I always check my receipts before we leave the shop, it's amazing how many mistakes you can find, especially on things that have been reduced. Got caught out a few weeks ago though, I used some gift vouchers in Boots and realised after we had driven away that they had only recorded three, not four, I phoned and went back a few days later but they were a bit stroppy and it wasn't even my fault. I must be more alert, I think I'm getting old and dippy! Oh yes, if you pay by credit card always keep them till you've checked them, just in case!

If its for an electrical item - that could go wrong, I staple the receipt to the instructions. Then, if ever anything goes wrong, I have it. Otherwise - the expression containing the words creek and paddle come to mind!
I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard

I had a number of receipts from an established retailer which were printed in a way similar to thermal fax, three months later, the receipts were blank pieces of paper :)

Do I keep them? - yes

How long for? - I'll let you know when i throw some away.

I used to just keep receipts for non food items. Until the guarantee expired.

Then I came across a thread on here. Someone asking about the price of something and if they had a receipt from two years previous.

Since then I've been putting all my receipts in a box. Got about 4 years worth now.

I have a divided file thing and save the current month in a shoebox (all receipts). At the end of the month I use a small plastic envelope - the kind 5 packs of pants come in - to shove all the receipts into. Then I put it into the correct month in the divider and throw away last years receipts. HTH.

I keep all receipts with the monthly statements after I've checked them off for 1yr.
Payslips about 6yrs, electrical 2yrs and the instruction booklets for every appliance I ever buy till I get rid of it, which can be several years.
Nice if I freecycle the item as they get the full instructions with it.
It amazes me that people chuck Tesco/store receipts away as they leave the store and when 'wombled' they have paid by card.
Do some people never cross check with their monthly CC statements????

I have got some of these too.

Can be a pain if the receipt is for an electrical item and you need to claim under the guarantee, only to find that the receipt has faded and you have blank piece of paper!
