Do you think that Tesco "engineer" stock?

I went to T*sco today with a list of stuff which I had checked on the website for prices. I was really disappointed to find that roughly a third of stuff on my list was out of stock. It wasn't big offer stuff, just things like Pasata, Value pasta sauce, value biscuits, casserole mix. They had sel's for them but there was no stock there at all, and in some cases they had put other stuff in there so that you would think that THAT was the price when in fact it was not. e.g.- there was a label for the pasata at 29p but no stock - they had put loads of the pasata with basil in its place but that was 69p - it would be so easy to just pick that up and I bet most people don't even check their bills so wouldn't know! IT was the same with the Finest scampi - that is on offer for £2.00 but again no stock but the space was filled with Tesco scampi which wasn't on offer and was £2.55. I had a till spit voucher to use and so got some shopping but I won't be going again!

There's another thread somewhere today about Asda running out of stuff, particularly value things. And yes I really agree, it's awful when they put more expensive items in the place of the cheaper ones without moving the shelf label. I've been caught out by it even when I think I'm quite a canny shopper, if you're in a hurry it can easily happen.

If I see it I either move the items to their rightful place leaving a gap if there aren't too many, or if there's a lot I remove the shelf label and pop it down the back of the shelf.

Haven't been arrested yet!! Probably makes no difference at all but if it saves just one person from paying too much unexpectedly then it's worth doing.

....and ps, Morrison's do it too, I'm sure every shop would.

If Tesco put more expensive stuff above a different SEL I just buy it and then DTD afterwards. Sometimes they try and say you should read the description but I just tell them that I don't have my glasses and can only see the prices. Never failed yet.

Also works well if they've recently upped the price - often they change one SEL and leave others with the old price. Again, DTD it and beat them at their own game.

Love the way they blame the customer when it can't be hard for them to change the sel to the product in place.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.
  • As everyone buys the cheap brand, they end up with loads of the more expensive one (first noticed on Passata coincidentally).
So they dont put the cheap one out and fill the shelves with the one they want shot of.

Or collar a member of staff and ask if anything thats OOS is in stock but no 1 has put anything out for that section due to being asked to do something else.

Absolutely, yes I do think so.

But it's up to you whether you buy it.

Its not the policy of my employer(in any store ive worked in), if something is out of stock then another item shouldnt fill the gap without a ticket saying "sorry out of stock" but ive found things in the wrong place on the shelf which makes mine and everyone elses jobs harder due to shift not being able to read.

And they wonder why customers complain when they have been overcharged.

I don't think they do it deliberately, no. Those shelf-stackers are presumably minimum wage and under pressure to unload their carts. It is not too surprising that sometimes they overlook the shelf labels.

Yes I definitely do and have on many occasions complained about this practice .They usually mumble rubbish about 'Oh its a mistake by the shelf stackers '
I don't believe a word of that .I also hate it when stuff isn't priced clearly and will grab one of the 12 year old 'suits' that seem to stand around doing b***er all to get them to check the price .One of them actually told me that I could go and check the price at the till, at the other end of the store.
Boy did his ear get a blistering I have a slight mobility problem and his legs were a good 50 years younger than mine and he was doing bog all else .I am a customer, not a floorwalker its his job to help customers not stand around telling his underpaid minions what to do:mad:.He went rather red and scuttled off to find the price:D .I will not be intimidated by young men like this I own shoes older than them for goodness sake;) We have to get their perspective changed WE are the customers, THEY are the ones trying to sell the goods. I will not be told to run around after some snotty lad.I wear my politest air normally in shops but will not be told what to do by anyone .I am a founder memebr of 'The Grumpy Old woman's' brigade and I bet they quake when I go in there. The majority of shop workers are lovely, it just seems to be these young lads, barely out of nappies who seem to have forgotten the old adage about the customer coming first.I am positive that not only Tesco's but all the other big supermarkets 'push' the sales of things buy restricting the sales of others.I live near to a Tesco's metro and since it was refurbed very little of the value or cheaper end of the market is stocked there ,I am lucky that I can drive to the big tesco's a mile away and get the more inexpensive stuff there but a lot of folk can't, and in Rainham where I live the Tesco's is the only supermarket for food available (apart from a small 7-11 down by the station, thats for emergencys only)Their superstore is a mile away and they do stock an awful lot more but they too often have big gaps where the cheaper brands used to be It pays to be a canny shopper and I'm all of that :):)
