We need some advice about financing a mortgage. What is the best way to find an Independent Mortgage Broker and what sort of charges should we be looking at?

There is no set fee industry-wide. The independent mortgage adviser will tell you his fee scale and what commission you will be rebated if he finds the best deal is a commission paying deal.
For example, I charge £299. If the best deal is a direct to lender deal, you'll get no rebate. If the best deal pays 0.3% commission, on a £100k mortgage you'll get a rebate of £300 refunding the fee you've paid.
Based on your location, my fee is irrelevant to you so I don't mind quoting it to you as I only work face to face in the Staffordshire area.

You are best asking friends and relatives for a recommendation, or you could check https://www.unbiased.co.uk. Switch off the email/website option and you'll get the full list for your area, not just the paid-for ads.I am a mortgage broker.
