How to become private Russian teacher?

Options
I'd like to earn some extra income by doing some Russian tutoring. I'm fluent in English but it is my second language. I'd love to work with kids but I'm not sure if I can or what qualifications do I have to have. I have BA (Hons) in marketing but I'm not sure if this will be good enough.

So really I just need to know where to start.Does anyone have any advice or recommendations as to what I should do, how much to charge, where to advertise, whether I should get any further training...

Thank you!

  • If you want to work in a state school as a qualified teacher, you'd have to do a training year either in a university or in a school, and then a probationary year as an NQT.

Unless the degree in marketing had a transferable curriculum subject component, such as Maths, English, etc., you options will probably be limited to teaching at primary level as a general subjects teacher. Competition for these places is very strong. You can do a formal exam in your native tongue and be awarded a qualification in it, which would help any application to train to teach modern foreign languages, but very few schools employ a full time Russian MFL teacher.

You could, of course, work as an unqualified teacher in a private school (or academy/free school), where there is probably more scope for Russian, but, again, in competition against qualified teachers and you'd likely be on the lower, unqualified teacher pay scales (c.£15k-25k).

I would suggest you contact local schools looking for teaching assistants for classroom experience, as you have to show interest and experience to even gain an interview for training, then take it from there.

Unfortunately, it's become very difficult to secure a training place, or a teaching assistant position, as schools tighten their belts.

If there's a University locally that teaches Russian (and therefore has students learning it) you could perhaps put an advert on their noticeboard offering Russian conversation practice on a one-to-one basis - although you should take care to do this in a reasonably public place until you know that you can trust your client.

It'd be a good selling point if you went into a primary school for experience: TAs sometimes cover the teachers for an afternoon or two a week and being able to teach them Russian would be attractive.

I have seen adverts for private french lessons, usually on cards in phone boxes.
  • Contact your local FE College, especially those that offer adult informal learning. They may offer the likes of spanish, french etc. and so may want to offer Russain as well. Might get some translation work as well!

I don't know the exact rules for it but certainly a few people I know sell private tuition via Gumtree and other such classified sites. Some are doing well enough to rent a small room for holding the sessions in.

If you like kids then there are also the options of being a nanny type person as some do explicitly look for people with language skills either to assist with their kids becoming multilingual or wanting their kids more exposed to their homelands native language. A premium for the languages can be added to the normal rates.
