in Cutting tax
Hi,
I hope this isn't already answered somewhere I did look but didn't find it anywhere. I'm starting a new job on Monday but it's a temporary contract so i'm keeping my old job at weekends. I've been told that i have to pay extra tax on the second job but i thought it was all based on how much you earn not how many jobs you have? Also if i do have to pay extra tax on the second job how can i make the weekend job my second job?
Thanks in advance

Hi ALittleInLove,
Ok, so your first job you do at the weekends is classed as your "first" job, your new one is your "second". When you fill out a P46 for your new job, it will ask you to tick several boxes and you must tick Box C which is "I have another Job or receive a Pension". This automatically puts you on a BR Tax Code, which (like you rightly said) Taxes you more, as you don't have any Tax free allowance, and all your earnings are being Taxed at 20%. Now, you can however ring the HMRC and ask them to either swap the codes over, so your Tax Code (which I'm just assuming is a standard 747L or any number ending in L code) can now be applied to your "second" job and your BR code be switched over to your "first" job. You can also ask the HMRC to split your "first" job Tax Code so you can receive the whole allowance split over two jobs. It's totally up to you, and you can decide based on your earnings for either job.Competition Stats:

it would be useful to know how much you earn in your first job and how much you earn in your second job0
