  • Unfortunately, it does look like the nursery have now passed the debt to a collection agency which will have incurred additional charges & you won't now be able to pay the original balance to the nursery.

I'm sorry for asking but if you have the money to pay, why haven't you done so?

Did you speak to the nursery at all and ask for extra time to pay?

  • Send the £262 in to the nursery not the debt collection agency. There is more than a chance that the additional debt collection fee will be written off depending on how the arrangement between the nursery and the agency works. If the debt has been sold then the agency will want its fee, but its also equally possible that the nursery simply has the agency on a retainer which then entitles the nursery to recover the collection fee. In many instances they won't bother as they'll have got their money and won't bother with the extras. If nothing else it will keep any interest etc down. Adding on a collection fee and interest is sometimes a useful scare tactic to wake debtors up where they can pay but just haven't.

  • Have you spoken to the nursery about it at all - explained the situation and asked for extra time to pay it etc or have you not been in touch with them and left the money outstanding?

The best thing to do is always speak to whoever you owe the money to and see if something can be worked out rather than just "head burying" - it took me years to realise this!

If the nursery were unaware of your situation, it may help to have a chat with them and see if they will accept the outstanding amount but as Westondave says, if it has been sold on, then the debt collection agency will want their fees and it's unfortunately probably too late to do this.
