3D Modelling for extra income.

Hi guys,

I am a recent graduate with a computer games related degree, and have just secured a job as a Computer Aided Design 3D Modeler. I am looking to make a bit of money on the side doing 3D modeling and looking for some guidance.

I know about the multiple freelance sites on the net. The trouble is, theres ALWAYS someone willing to do the job for less, so getting a job seems incredibly hard.

I signed up for Fiverr on there, doing small 3D models that would take no longer than 30mins. I have had a steady flow of orders and sitting on around $24 after a week. Fiverr takes a cut of $1 meaning I get $4 a job, and with the exchange rate its abit rubbish.

I am looking to try and move away from this low pay work but not sure how. I could make a website offering my services, but it means I have to spend months with advertising and SEO and getting my name out there.

Just looking for suggestions really, and any input welcome

Many Thanks

Ewaf

  • So you get $4 for doing nothing for an hour? I'd rather do something and make 7.25...

I really don't understand what you are talking about?
  • Depends how good you are? if you can make good game assets you can sell them on the unity game assets store?

  • I'd firstly check that you aren't breaching your contract by offering 3D modelling services when this is what you do for your employer.

The freelancing sites can be sources of ok income but firstly you'll struggle with those from lower cost countries being able to under cut you and also being able to get feedback etc if you need feedback to win jobs.

I dont know if the volume is high enough but certainly for webdesign on those types of sites you will fine people that will pay a premium for local people, native english speakers or those with extensive positive feedback. You also need to develop a skill to identify those wanting a good job done -v- those that are time wasting or are just looking at price.

Who exactly are the target market for your services? Could you create things like Vectors for the stock image websites?

Thankyou for the link to unity store, not come across that before.

I am pretty sure I am not breaching my contract with my employer. I might give the freelance sites ago but do it for disgustingly cheap to get initial feedback?

Search out some of the indie games forums as well. A lot of the people that post on them are always looking for reliable sources of assets that can be trusted to supply on time at a reasonable price?

You could make more money by getting someone else to do the modelling. There are a lot of highly skilled people around the world who don't have any idea where to get overseas clients from *hint hint*
