Yes folks, I'm contemplating once again swimming where the great whites circle; today I emailed an IFA to see if he can come up with something that beats a DIY for a lump sum.

I'd appreciate it if you could all be on hand to apply a wet suit tourniquet if it's required at short notice.

Thanks.

:D

Why? You are happy to DIY. You seem to know what you want and what you are doing. So, why bring an IFA into it?
I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.

i guess its like winning the lottery - you know the chances are millions to one you won't but if you don't buy a ticket the chances are absolutely zero, so you buy a ticket just in case - if you do't win its no dissapointment.

the same goes for ifas, you know they want an arm and a leg, they have access to better deals than us the public and may suggest a good deal with no guarantees, they treat you as total financial morons but you never know there may be one out there that's different - unless you try you will never know!

It's kind of like second marriages: a triumph of optimism over experience. :D

However, an IFA *should* be able to beat DIY amateur like me every day of the week, come rain or shine, so let's see.

I have never bought a lottery ticket and have never backed a horse.

    Just saying.

    Why?

True enough, and a SIPP holding a carefully chosen selection of ITs and bonds is my benchmark, but let's see.

If said IFA comes up with something interesting (and indications are that he could) then great. If it's a same-old-same-old mix of high-fee OEICS, then I'll be disappointed.

    Open mind. As ever.

I don't know why you don't engage the services of dunstonh, to be honest. Seems to be the most level-headed and knowledgeable adviser on here.
