How to complain? Saucer broke and cut my hand!

Hi folks, I hope you can give me the benefit of your wisdom on this one. I bought some cups and saucers last weekend from a discount shop, (they were not marked as seconds). As I was washing a saucer today, it broke in half and the sharp edge cut my hand (only a small cut)! I know that my contract is with the retailer, but I think that the manufacturer might be more helpful, as they have a good reputation for selling "quality" products. So my questions are:
Is it best to complain to the retailer or to the manufacturer?
Would it be more effective to make a complaint by e-mail or by letter?
Do you have any other ideas or tips that would help?
Thanks so much, in advance – I love this site!

tbh i wouldnt bother and just put it down to one of those things that happens.
i bought a dinner set and did exactly the same but with a bowl, i put in down to perhaps being a little heavy handed.
i guess if you wanted to take it further you vould speak to the retalier who could eithe give you another saucer to replace the broken one and then they might get intouch with the manufacturer to see if there were any noted defects with the production of the itemIf You See Someone Without A Smile......Give Them One Of Yours0 -
^Definitely not. They can't have been that good quality if they're gonna break while being washed. You'd have to be some iron giant to have them snap in half due to heavy hands. Or at least be trying to snap them.
I say just go back to the retailer with them. They'll probably refund you.0 -
surely this is the wrong thread to be posting this??Don't ask me, Im SKINT0

Astral cream and a selection of seeds from Suttons0 -
Would be tricky to prove that the saucer broke because of a manufacturing defect rather than being stacked / handled a bit heavier than normal.
Possibly put it down to experience.

Maybe you should take the supplier to court. If you exhaust the full court process in the UK up to, and including, the House of Lords and you still don't get any joy then maybe take it to the European Court of Human Rights. Alternatively, decide to put it down to experience and just forget about it!It's not the taking part but the winning that counts.0

redmandarin, I would return the items to the retailer and ask for a refund or replacement and also email the manufacturer to explain what happened, they may have known faults with this particular product and probably would be interested to know? The £2.00 Coin Savers Club = approx £22.00  :j.. The 20p Savers Club = £17.80.

if you have a new item and it breaks, surely it's not fit for the purpose?
you could always contact these guys though http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/, they'll be less sarcastic for a start and will be able to advise on who to put your complaint to.:rudolf:0
