I like the UK weather. We lived in the Middle East for a while and soon got tired of the heat. We dreamed of sitting in a nice country pub in front of a log fire and watching the snow float down or the rain lash against the windows.
I'm not enjoying the current fine weather - much too hot and sticky. I can't wait for it to cool down.0 -
The UK is a great place to live though I accept that there are some serious problems that successive governments and we, the collective, have failed miserably to address.
One of the biggest being the cult of celebrity which breeds envy, a strange 'conformity', if you can call it that...and an unprecedented negativity toward those who don't fit in. Ignorance has become 'cool'. Sneering at others almost a national sport and the number of people scowling or just looking incredibly miserable is a bit of a worry.
We appear to be a nation of worriers too....but I wouldn't swap this sceptred isle for anywhere else - warts and all!0 -

My quality of life isn't really based on cost of cigarettes, the weather, cost of petrol and the amount of holidays I get per year. But fully understand that some people's might be.
The survey did not take in to account the cup of tea I had in bed this morning made by the lovely Mrs C, the fact that I completely forgot that Liverpool v Everton is on at lunchtime today and I am free to watch it and that the deli round the corner has started selling the bagels I like again after a worrying absence. These things do improve my quality of life.0 -
In the UK I can go into a shop and buy things because I speak the language. I can drive down the road and not get lost because I can read the signs. I can watch the telly because I speak the language. I can go about my daily life understanding the rules/laws, ensuring I am not breaking any of them through simply 'not knowing' (although that's a moving target). I couldn't go anywhere furren!! It's irrelevant to me if it's better/worse as I can't go anywhere else
Hate the wind and rain though.0 -
I am from the US so don't give a flying fig about 'class'. There is an underclass, but it was caused by the last 50 years of welfare, not because of anyone looking down on them per say.
The real problem in the UK is the weather, and the long working hours.
What a load of tosh!
Anyone who thinks the 'underclass' has been caused by the last 50 years of the welfare state needs to do some reading and find out what it was like to be poor before then.
It is an interesting fact that most of the places that score highest in 'happiness' and similar surveys actually have a much higher level of welfare than we do in the UK.
The best societies to live in all appear to be the most fairest.0 -
What a complete load of bollocs. We live in a beautiful country with a very civilised population. Where we have problems tend to be where we have imported them from other countries. This type of report reminds me of the Eurovision Song Contest - United Kingdom Nil Pois.
There is absolutely nothing civilized about the estate i live on. This country is going downhill fast and it amuses me at times when i see people saying its a great country to live in, i wonder if they will still be saying that once the dealers, thieves, and families from hell get shoved into their nice areas because all the 5hitholes are now full.
Thats basically were we are at as far as i can see, there is next to no room left on the rough estates in my area so now the scumbags are being given private rents in the nicer areas.0 -

Cheerful soul, aren't you Jimmy?
Life is what you make of it, the country you live in (within reason - I'm talking about developed or nearly developed countries) makes little or no difference to your quality of life. Your quality of life is about friends, family, little moments of happiness, setting goals and achieving them, aquiring new skills, learning new things, gathering information, being able to indulge yourself in things you enjoy, challenging yourself etc. etc. If you live in a developed country with a basic infrastructure then you can do all of these things, doesn't matter whether it's Japan, USA, UK, Germany, France etc. etc.
Of course, different things in each country will turn people on or off depending on your preference, but sunny days or cheap cigarettes is not enough to make your soul happy.0 -

Yeah not really bothered about sunny days or cigarettes, its the little things in life that i want.
I had a little moment of happiness a while ago at the park with my younger relations, lasted all of 5 seconds before the weed and beer crew turned up to get mashed.0
