I couldn't just start loaning out my car to any old tom !!!!!! or harry. I need to go through channels to do so. But I can with my house.
Yes I agree and I have to assume that everyone who talks about renting property here does thatAnd if they don't, maybe that is the reason for their resistance to this proposed scheme? The few quid it will cost them is minuscule to the amount of return they are all getting on their investments.
Either way Licensing landlords is a start to a better, more structured and professional rental system in this country.Dont wait for your boat to come in 'Swim out and meet the bloody thing'0 -

Don't get that GD as you could but you are the one at risk.
The same as letting a house if you do not let mortgage companies know insures etc you are at risk.
Licensing is a good thing, it will protect both parties in reality.
But I have to agree it could possibly push up rents if it costs a fair bit, those costs are likely to be passed on.
Same as any other business.0 -

This whole amateur landlord thing is really overdone imho. It's just owning a house, and fixing things occasionally. It does not require a professional membership or a degree in rocket science.
If you can do it for yourself, you can generally do it for a tenant to. It wouldn't tax even the most challenged of posters here.
I think you'll find you can start loaning out your car to any tom !!!!!! or harry. You just need to makie sure the right insurance is in place first (or they have the right insurance). Why this great need for big goverenent to get wastefully involved into any transaction between consenting adults?0 -
You can lend out your car to almost any Tom, !!!!!! and Harry - or get one for yourself - http://whipcar.com0

This is like licensing every employer in the country to make sure they comply with employment law. Just a money maker for the local govenment which will only push up rent further. I'm surprised you want to see rents going up Graham.
The vast majority charge the highest amount they can get away with.0 -

To be fair, it is their asset so they can do what they like with it. I do agree there needs to be better enforcement of the housing laws though.0 -
Mad thought for the day...
'The customer is always right'... how come this doesn't apply to UK housing?0 -
We have licensing in Scotland already, and it hasn't seemed to have made any difference one way or the other.
This strikes me as just another scam for the council to make money.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”
