Now, as the guy responsible for writing the aforementioned "this", I just thought I'd pop on to recommend reading the other two threads linked to in the post itself. They both talk about the same problem but in greater detail.

I also thought I'd mention that even we use baby oil at our sheet metal shop to get stainless steel surfaces nice and shiny. But do use something like a microfiber or lint-free cloth as you can pick up bits quite easily.

    Happy buffing.

Well many thanks for your most helpful 'removing scratches' guide Tinbasher!

We have an American Fridge Freezer. It is stainless steel and whilst baby oil takes any marks off, we have noticed a few scratches.

You can't feel them when I rub my finger over them - any suggestions on what would go deeper to get these scratches out without damaging the surface?

    Thanks

  • Im trying to get the scratches out of the back board and hob in my kitchen, it looks awful and doesnt look like i have cleaned it properly.

Does anyone know of a good way to get rid of these scratches on a budget!?

  • Not really on a budget, but one time I always use a branded 'specialist' cleaner is on my SS cooker & backplate - I use the CIF one*. IMO it is the only thing which really cleans it well and brings up a shine without my having to scrub like mad, and without scratching.

I'd be very glad if someone does know how to get rid of scratches, as my 'helpful' DH cleaned it once with something else and it has some scratches to prove it!

    Good luck!

*Otherwise eveything else in my house is stardrops, soda crystals, vinegar or v.cheap lidl liquid bleach!

Do you mean scratches or smudges? if its smudges and its stainless steel then the only way I could get mine clean was to wash it with warm soapy water and a non scratch sponge. Then buff it dry with a cloth and it was streak free. I know you can buy special cleaners etc but I never bothered . This was in our previous house (fitted a cheap new kitchen to sell it..to buy a house with a completely knackered kitchen lol!)

  • There are light scratches, nothing TOO deep but still noticable.

Just hate that un cleaned look.

I'd be interested if there was a way of removing light scratches from stainless steel too. My helpful DS scoured my hob  I normally just wipe it over with an ecloth and then buff it up with the drying ecloth (no idea what that's called!) It keeps a lovely smear free shine, now of course with scratches...
