Danger in '2nd spring'

Plants blossom for the second time this year as temperatures are forecast to reach 28c

"It is supposed to be autumn but it feels like summer – after a summer that felt more like winter. And if that’s confusing you, you’re not alone. Plants have become so perplexed by the unseasonably warm weather that they are convinced it’s spring – and are blooming for a second time."

I have day-lillies that have just flowered. :j

I do worry that we'll get a flush of new growth over the next 10 days, then the weather will flip to cold and with first frost the whole lot will be killed off. Reckon that once it gets chilly, will need to fleece all over the garden to give plants a chance to harden off the new growth.

    Got roses in bloom
  • It should only affect any weak growth. So a few soft leaves or buds will die but it shouldn't affect a healthy plant.

I have an oriental poppy that has just flowered again and the golden rod has sprung up with 2' high new shoots a few weeks ago.

There is an old saying about flowering twice and a harsh winter, so I've made a note on my diary to test the theory.

Now my strawberries are a late fruting variety anyway, but it's always 50/50 this time of year whether they will become edible or not. Last year 2 out of a dozen were edible and the rest didn't mature enough in time. Now I have had 3 in the last week and the development on the rest is racing by! No runners yet even! I keep waiting with my pots and bent paperclips lol, first year I am trying this so I am a bit miffed to be kept waiting!

Brrr-ace yourselves! Britain to shiver in -20C in WEEKS as councils stockpile extra grit

Britain is just weeks away from being in the grip of temperatures as low as -20C, forecasters have predicted.

Parts of Britain already saw snow this week, with two inches falling in the Cairngorms in Scotland.

The rest of Britain is being warned to brace itself for wintry conditions and falling snow from the beginning of November.
And it looks like the colder weather is already on its way - as temperatures today plunged in certain areas to just 8C - a staggering 21.5C below last weekend's record highs - with the wind chill making it feel decidedly colder.

Gosh, its winter and in a few (thats between 3 and 10 I assume)weeks we may have snow. Its highly likely there will be snow on the mountains, it does every year. Yes its chilly outside, when I was a kid we broke the ice on puddles in September and I live on the South Coast. I don't know what the panic is all about.
ps the temp is due to go back up to 20deg this weekend, positively balmy.
pps it can't be cold yet as the postman is still in shorts.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

    Usual clueless Daily Mail exaggeration.

BTW if you are worried about the snow, get snow tyres - miles better than 4WD and keep you driving even in the worst of snow.

Can't get the moron in front who has slid to a halt out of your way, though :D
