Hi I hope this is in the right forum - I want to possibly buy a new TV and came across this site http://eu.buyitplayit.org/ Now the prices seem a little too good to be true for some things, so that always makes me a bit suspicious! Could anyone tell me if they've used or heard of this company before? What checks do I do to make sure it's legit?
Thanks
Thanks

Their list of couriers seems to suggest they may import the products, in which case a purchaser could also pay a clearance fee and import duties0 -
DONT use this website. It is fraudulent. See this thread for further details:

Thanks so much!! I thought my old motto "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is" might apply here. But as it kept coming up when I was using Google shopper to check prices of TVs, I thought I should ask if anyone had heard of it. Thanks to both of you.

If there's something particular you're looking for you could use a price comparison website. They make their money from referral fees.
http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/
Offer of the Day. You'll have to type this one into Google etc because they've fallen out with MSE.
Alternatively you could try a search on Hot Uk Deals which has user-generated content.
http://www.hotukdeals.com/search?keywords=tv&x=16&y=12&action=search
For general advice on audio and visual equipment AVForums is an excellent resource.

You can get a months trial with Which? which will cost a pound. Don't forget to cancel though before the quite expensive monthly subscription kicks in.

I would recommend getting the (free) browser add-on Web of Trust. This gives colour coded ratings to websites both individually and in search engine listings. Trusted sites will have a green rating and they are the ones to look for.

Whatever sites that you decide to buy from do make sure that there is a contact address and a telephone number preferably a geographical one. You can be based anywhere in the world and still have 0844, 0845 and 0800 numbers. 0870 and 0871 numbers should be viewed with suspicion as well because site owners make money out of those.
All websites have to be registered and anybody can look up those registrations on sites such as this one:

good idea ,because there are many scams of online business , or you can just go big sites like Ebay or Amazon etc.

thanks Coopdivi! I'm going to copy and paste ur post onto onenote for future ref because it's a mine of info!
I had never heard of Offer of the day or av forums so will def be heading over to them. Although I do know of HDUK, I never remember to head over there, but I really should start going there as well as checking out MSE.
thanks for the mywot recommendation, i've now installed it. I also headed over to the dodgy site so I could give it a bad rating on mywot - i dunno if they help use other ratings to help alert others to scam sites, but it's a great tool anyway! i had been thinking something like this would be useful but didn't know where to start for getting a good one.
i am already a which? member. we find the which? car bit particularly useful whenever we need to replace our 2nd hand car every few years, after reading how spot on they were with the first few cars we had and all the niggles they developed! it helped us avoid these things in the future.
thanks for the whois.com link - just for future reference are there any things I should be looking out for in particular to help spot dodgy sites - apart from the fact it seems a very recent site?
thanks againBe nice - it's free!

thanks for that. i feel a bit silly i never thought of searching for the actual website in the forums, but hopefully more exposure and more people will know to avoid this site. It's a shame to read some MSE'ers have lost some money on it.Be nice - it's free!

Look on google for the website, if there have been problems they can show on there, though it isn't definitive, especially with new sites
Use pricerunner or pricegrabber to get an average cost of an item, if the site you have is widely different then asking why is an obvious move.
A bigger retail may have secured a favourable deal by ordering in items in large quantities, though if it is a single shop or small chain that is unlikely to apply.
I e-mail a company with a relative enquiry, if you get a response, how does it look, again, not definitive.
If a popular item has been heavily discounted you will probably find some mention of it in the grabbit section
If you decide to buy from anywhere, look for the item on amazon UK as they often have reviews0
