fiancee has a bad back!!

hello, my fiancee has been diagnosed with a slipped disk. we have been seeing the nhs physio, is this the same as a chyropractor? i have had lots of people say she should go to one or a "bonesetter" and they will near enough magically sort her out, whereas with the physio it seems more of a case of operate or wait a long time! any comments from people with experience in this is welcome thank you.

  • Notwithstanding that this could be construed as medical advice - most people associate chiropractors with a poke, massage and a crunch as people are magically fixed. Not only is this unfair on chiropractors, it also ignores the fact that the crunches or clicks are often what are called facet joints (tiny ones along the side of the vertebrae that make it flex and twist) - and do not have direct relevance to the main vertebrae which the 'discs' are bulging from between.

So they are assuming two different things are the same, and freeing off a locked facet joint is significantly different to allowing swelling to dissipate over time for the disc to repair itself and your OH to get back into working order.

Trust the physio - they have lots of different techniques and treatments and if they feel there is more you could do, they will tell you.

(PS, ask about a graded exercise plan - most physio departments offer them, and they have good outcomes for participants)

The grounds for my opinion? I'm a frequent flier with orthopaedics, rheumatology, A&E and physio. As is DD. I've also been treated in the private sector - and the NHS wins for me everytime.

    Hi Ian,

As your query isn't related to Old Style moneysaving I've moved your thread over to the Health board. However, please be aware that we aren't allowed to ask for or give medical advice on this forum.

I suspect you mean 'her'! :)

Physiotherapy doesn't stand up to scrutiny on a trial setting and I am constantly amazed at why these services are ever comissioned.

Really? News to me. Could you quote the independent randomised trials that demonstrate this in relation to every single treatment and technique available to a Chartered Physiotherapist in a well equipped department?
