Removal of plastic stuck to floor of oven - all suggestions welcome

Options
A teaser for you wonderful ladies (and gents) of OS!

During a phonecall to my son he said that his flatmate had put a ready meal straight on the bottom of the oven, no tray, and unsurprisingly it had melted on. They've cleaned up the curry but a 5cm square piece of plastic has welded itself to the base of the oven. They've bought all sorts of chemicals:eek: to try to remove it to no avail. I was wondering if anyone here had an idea on how to remove it. It's a new cooker, so they can't do much scraping, but if they can't get it off I suspect they'll be paying for a replacement.

I'm not too worried about the fumes as they are not going to be using the oven now apparently (sigh), but I'd rather they fixed it soon.

Thanks for any and all help!
MrsB.

Stanley knife paint scraper. The thing you use to scrap paint off windows and has a replaceable Stanley knife blade. Works a treat. Bottom of the oven wont be affected with scraping, just keep the blade flat to the oven base.

Is it really bad if I admit to using that thing to actually just clean my oven as a rule? :o

I hate cleaning my cooker. I tend to leave it longer than I should. :o

(It's also great on the glass oven doors, with care.)

I would try ice cubes and a razor blade (you can get scrapers for ceramic hobs that would do the job, or a scraper for taking excess paint off glass).

Make the plastic as cold as possible with the ice then try to get under it with the blade (being very careful of course!).

  • Well, he just made the comparison to a razor blade and logged off (we were skyping). I imagine I'll find out if that works soon.

I love the fact that you use one to clean the oven regularly:rotfl:. I just don't clean mine.:o

Once you get it clear, I`d suggest buying Lakeland oven liner which is quite thick and it means that if anything is spilt on it, it is easily cleared up. It cant be used when the element of the oven is in the base.

This has maintained the base of my oven for about 5 years now and is well worth the outlay. HTH
