Advice required! Employer / wages / earnings

If anyone has experience of a situation like this or could advise in any way I would very much appreciate it...
The situation
I work as an advisor for a college (course advice), as part of a government project we have been asked by our employer to work at a upcoming event as advisors. I have been to many training days to prepare for this as asked to by my employer. Recently we discovered that the government project has money to pay us for our work roughly speaking £750 for the training & £300 per day for working the actual event. (happy days)
Unfortunately my employer is now saying that we cannot have this pay as we are already being paid by the college (something like £70 per day) and that the extra money is for the college.
I happen to know that we (the advisors) are going to be invoiced and paid the full amount (not the college)
I asked to take annual leave on the days of the event so I could claim the more attractive pay packet - my manager refused annual leave or even unpaid leave as she thinks that would mean she can't take the money.
This all feels pretty unfair and like the college are trying to muscle in on earnings that we are entitled to..
i would imagine that if I was paid the full amount I may have to repay the college as per my daily rate to cover myself (£70) but they seem to think coz they are paying me that day that they are entitled to all of the £300 per day.
I suppose I need to know whether they have any claim on the payment because they are already paying me? - It seems it would be more reasonable to let me have unpaid leave and earn my money from the government project.
I will be checking over my colleges policies but any help or advice would be a great help...
BTW - This event was something that we are being made to do by my employer - so it's not like I just went and started working for someone else..
hope someone can help
