I really want to improve my Spanish (did a very short college course last year but now unable to continue due to family commitments)
I need something I can work through at home and thought R.S might do the job but there are so many mixed reviews about it that I can't make up my mind
Anyone here used it?

Why not have a look at the Learn a language for free using online tools guide.
LiveMocha looks interesting too, I'm considering trying LiveMocha after posting it for someone else recently. Was also thinking of taking up Spanish as well. Only know a few phrases at the moment, would like to learn more fairly soonish.0 -

Livemocha looks quite good so might have a go with that to start with. Thanks you :T0 -
If you already have even some basics you will probably find Rosetta Stone far too slow and annoying. I had not done much Spanish at all when I tried it and gave up after about 40 minutes of 'learning' about 10 words.
There are lots of internet organisations where you can do a language swap, either by email or skype. Speaking to real people is the best way to learn. How about an advert in your local paper, if you are near a university or an area of high immigration - you will help someone with English work if they help you with Spanish?
Failing that, get a foreign boyfriend. It worked for me :-D0 -
Get a reasonably good phrase book to start with, it's actually a good starting point. The one I have may not be the best though I've found it fairly helpful as it's phonetically based e.g. My name is... Me llamo... followed by the phonetic pronunciation: may ya-mo...
The one I have is a Geddes & Grosset reference Spanish Phrasebook ISBN: 1855343509. You should be able to pick a new copy up for around £2.80.0
