Experian. Missing information from your file? Read on.

When consumers apply to see their credit file, there are occasions when they are not provided with full information they are entitled to, yet made to believe that they have it. Here is why.

When lenders send a record of a consumer’s address to Experian, there can be variations on their address. For example, 2 Park House can be recorded as Flat 2 Park House. This is the same address but the consumer is provided with a record for just variation. In contrary, lenders are provided with the full record, irrespective of the variations. In my case, I have at least 3 variations of my current address and I was provided with information about my past accounts only and nothing about current activities and my existing credit commitments. When I contacted Experian, they replied that this is the way they operate. Unfortunately, there are thousands of people who might be lead to believe that they have received their full credit file. What’s more, if there are any irregularities on their credit file, they will not be able to know it, even after seeing their credit report. This in effect can cause some serious financial implications.

I had to cancel their online service, as they wouldn’t provide all the information they hold about me. What can be done about it? Anyone else had similar problems?

why do you have 3 variations of your current address ?
Karma is a wonderful thing. ;)
  • My address is the format of 2 Park House, High Street, Any Town. The lenders enter my address in their format and then contact Experian to leave their trail. Therefore my address can be recorded as
    • Flat 2 Park House, High Street
    • 2 Park House, High Street
    • Park House, 2 High Street
I am sure that there are many whose addresses have been manipulated in a similar way. Experian state that they only provide consumers with information on the address supplied by the consumer, however, lenders get all the information, as this is clearly the same address, including the postcode. I had to cancel my online CreditExpert membership because they were not able to enter more than one current address and most of my current credit history was missing.

Sounds very unreasonable and not sure if they should be allowed to do that but as stated by Experian themselves, this is how they operate.
