now 20, have been working since i was 16 - being a kid and all never understood tax really was more concerned with not getting screwed with pay, thinking about it now im sure when i started at whsmiths (first job) i was on emergency tax for a while plus being the most unorganised company ive ever seen think ive overpaid tax
also i was on emergency tax for a couple of weeks at least in latest job, i have all my payslips but not sure about the p60 is it with the year total?
how can i check ive paid the right amount of tax and then set about getting it corrected?

Contrary to what you might think the Inland Revenue are very helpful.
Get a telephone number from the local telephone book.
Phone up and tell them what you have wrtten here.
It will not help to blame W H Smith for the results of your own ignorance of your tax situations rather blame yourself and ask if they can help you. I am sure they will...0 -
i can blame them for not paying me right for two years which didnt help my understanding but yeah i should have looked up on it earlier
will give it a shot
will they need anything else apart from payslips anyone?Yes Your Dukeiness

They should already know how much you have been paid, and how much tax has been deducted, because your employer(s) should have told them.0

No, but you shouldn't have to provide them with copies of payslips.reehsetin wrote:^but they wont just automatically refund it will they?0 -
just checked http://www.yourtaxrebate.co.uk this site, according to this at least 1 year i have been over charged £500 tax
my first year working i have 4 payslips missing, end of 03 and begining of 04 and no p60 for that year, where can i get the information from and if possible copies of the payslips and or the p60

First thing, do not use that company to get your refund. They won't do anything you can't do yourself, and charge a large amount.
HMRC will not need payslips, so don't worry about them. They will hopefully have all of the details of your pay ant tax ont he computer system somewhere, so you may not even need to provide P60's.
If they do ask for P60s then send what you have. If you don't have the particular years P60 that you require, write to WH Smiths, or ring them up and ask them to send you a statement of earnings showing you earnings for the appropriate tax year, and then send that on to HMRC who will accept it in the place of the missing P60.
When you have all the info, write a letter to HMRC asking them to review the amount of tax you have paid for the last x years (you can go back to the 2000-01 tax year. A tax year runs from 6 April one year to 5 April the next). If you want to cut out a few of the steps then send them a list of exactly where you worked and when, including any gaps where you were not working, were in full time education, and the P60s. Don;t bother with the payslips.
Remember to keep copies of all original documents that you send to them.0 -
thanks dont worry i wouldnt pay anyone
thank you for all your help
think i will just send them a letter, should be simple enough as i have only had 2 jobs over the last 4 years and in full time education throughout. i only have 1 p60 :S
i'll send a copy of that with letter and i have a list off the amounts from all my payslips for the last 4 years (except those 4) in excel that i can give them and hopefully they can contact me if any more information is requiredYes Your Dukeiness

im not sure you have a problem as you were only on emergency tax for a few weeks this is normally taken care off when you gat your correct tax code or at the latest 5 april.
is your tax code correct your tax allowance should be around £5035 per year giving a tax code somthing like 503L does this look about right.
and to be over charged £500 in one year and only on emengency tax for a few weeks you must be a very high earner.0
