Advice Needed Please

I am really hoping someone can help me here if poss

Basically I have been working for the same compnay for 5 years, all going good with pay and no issues....until this month!!

I logged onto my online banking to check salary had gone in (monthly paid) and saw they had only paid me half!! I logged into my online payslip at work and saw that over £1000 had been taken out for income tax:eek: I phoned the tax office up immediately who said oh its because you have 2 jobs with your company, I assured them I did not and gave them my payroll number, she said she would email my company to ensure that right tax code is applied......so I phoned my payroll up to find out what the hell they were playing at stating I had 2 jobs with 2 diff payroll numbers, this was friday and as payroll is outsourced to mauritius its a nightmare with them, first person I spoke to said they will try and pay it back through tax code in next months pay packet, that is not acceptable in my eyes I have bills to pay and 2 kids to feed and this is not my fault! I had no warning this was going to happen and I am still awaiting a call back from them since Friday, they are stating they are waiting for a call back from tax office, yet when I phoned tax office I got straight through and she said she would deal with it urgently!

What happens now and what can I do to get my money back, I cannot wait until next month:(

  • You get a loan and the company agrees to pay the interest if it is the company's error?
    Alternatively the company gives you "an advance against salary" and both of you try to sort out the clerical error in time for next month?
    What is the PAYE tax code on your 50% deductions pay slip?

    Then you ask yourself it it is sensible to sail so close to the wind financially?

    I get paid monthly the same amount every month! I budget myself to my pay, how is it fair that they slash my pay in half with no warning and I find out on the day I get paid? This is not my error but theirs! The tax code got changed begining of September to BR which is basic rate as they had me down as doing 2 jobs for the company which I do not have! The reason of me psoting was to find out if anyone else has had the same happen to them and trying to find out what I need to do, I am financially aware and I pay all of my direct debits monthly the day I get paid, so you can see the prediciment Im in when my salary is half of what I am expecting because of a clerical error from the Tax Office and my company.

    So again today I have tried to sort this out and yet they are still blaming each other:(

    HMRC will not give you any money; they will advise your company of the correct taxcode but that will not be applied until the next payroll run

    so you can only approach your company for an advance of salary or loan to tide you over.

    conventional financial wisdom is that people should have a savings buffer of several months spending; however many are unable to do that

    Ask your employer if they will be willing to re-run your last months salary. If they will get the name of the person responsible for the payroll and a fax number that HMRC can fax a tax code to.

    If they won't do that then the only option is a salary advance or a short term loan.

    As for being financially secure, sadly Im not, if my kids dad were to support financially then maybe!!! CSA now taking him to court, so maybe when I get money from him I can maybe not "sail so close to the wind financially"

    My husband is self employed and has work but not fantastic money, we hit rough patch 2 years ago when he had no work through recesion, we lost our house we lost everything, so we rely on my money, we budget, have no luxury's, no holidays, we live on what we have, so I guess you lucky there!

    I appreciate constructive feedback, bit not when you judge someone on their finances which you know nothing about! Maybe when you flat on your !!! financially you will understand my situation!!!

    It's very common for HMRC to point a finger at the employer, who point the finger at HMRC.....and neither of whom give a stuff about the victim of all this. How to resolve? OK, my suggestions in general are to tie up the details:

    1. Ask HMRC for the employer references of the 2 different employers they claiim to have employment details from in order to issue the BR code.
    2. If they have one, ask them to provide the 2 separate employee numbers from the same employer reference which has led them to issue the BR code.
    3. It's not unheard of for these clowns to tax the same job twice! I have clients in this position, and there have been posters on this site who've had this. If HMRC can't deliver sensible answers to questions 1 and 2, INSIST they remove the BR coding or your MP is going to hear about it.

    4. If you get good data in response to either question 1 or 2 from HMRC, you now know the problem is with your employer. In essence HMRC are saying your employer has issued you with 2 payslips, 2 pay cheques.
    5. Ask your employer for the missing payslip and missing net pay cheque.
    6. If they fail to produce this, insist they get back to HMRC to inform them which one is incorrect and needs deleted from their system so you get the right tax code back.
    7. Should they refuse, escalate this up the management chain, using grievance procedure or whatever it takes to get a finger removed from a lazy hole.

    Or you could ignore this clowns intimidating suggestions as it's more likely to cause problems in the long term by getting peoples backs up, especially 'escalating up the management chain'.

    Go to your employer as I suggested and ask, politely, if they can re-run the payroll for you. Explain your situation and express this matter is going to cause you financial hardship.

    If they can re-run it ask which is the right employee number, and get the name of the person responsible for the payroll and a fax number so the tax code can be faxed to them asap (normally within 15/20 minutes of your call).

    Even if they cannot re-run the payroll, call HMRC to confirm to them which employee number is correct so that you can be sure your record is up to date.

    It's completely pointless getting your employer to phone HMRC as the advisor on the other end of the phone at HMRC cannot change anything with a 3rd party over the phone. They can discuss the tax code itself and it's basis of operation with your employer but not change any other details, discuss how the code is calculated, etc.

    It sounds as though the problem has arisen as the employee number on the P60 differs from the one that was already held on your records. In these instances it is comepletly correct for HMRC to set up a new employment as they cannot be sure you do not have 2 seperate employments with your employer (this happens quite a lot with people who work for the local authority with a few different part time roles)

    My post was made on the basis that dramaqueen has already had a go at the "softly and softly" method and both HMRC and the employer are doing everything in their power to do nothing. Given that waiting 3 to 4 months to get this sorted would lead to great misery, an aggressive approach is it seems to me called for.

    The BR code is issued by HMRC, so that is the starting point - especially as we don't want to aggravate the employer except as a last resort, hence this is the final action on my list. I believe my suggested list of actions will at least inform drama queen whether HMRC or the employer is telling porkies, one of them clearly is. If it is HMRC then she can go in hard, find the asss that is not moving and apply a flame thrower to it if necessary. If it is the employer a more gentle approach is advised, but in the end if payroll / HR have an action to do to resolve this and they are not doing it then the flame thrower is going to have to be fired up.

    Thanks for replies...well finally I think got it sorted! Took your advice and sadly had to resort to the kiss someones !!! to finally get someone to do something!

    It was an error, both still blaming each other, however I will get my money back in october pay packet, that is earliest they could do it!!

    Still dont know why it happened or who is to blame, but it's taken a week now just to get it sorted!
