Hi, just want to introduce myself.
I am posting here kind of on behalf of me and kind of on behalf of my partner. My partner is too shy to register and does not really get the whole forum thing, she is a bit of a technophobe… she didn’t even have broadband at home until we moved in together five years ago.
I had lots of debts until my Mum helped me a long time back, all my money was going on interest. She made me take out a consolidation loan with massive repayments to clear it quickly, I appreciate that its probably not the best way to clear debts but it worked for me and whilst I still have a credit card debt that I don’t pay much more than the minimum on I budget ok and can afford it - I know I could do better with some discipline.
Its more about my partner, we keep our finances as separate as possible only with a joint bank account for bills. She has recently realised that she is in too much debt and has no realistic way to pay it back, she buried her head in the sand, I guess like everybody else. I kind of knew all along but buried my head in the sand too by never raising it with her, I should have really.
Anyway she is facing up to it and will be defaulting and taking on a DMP; I can already see she is happier and more optimistic although I guess its not going to be an easy process. I just wanted to introduce myself on here, I have been told you are all very helpful. I will be back to ask some questions for her and some for me.

Hi NoisyParker:)
You do realise that because you are financially linked you will be affected by her DMP?Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.0 -
Hello :hello:
If she can I'd suggest that she does a full SOA (statement of affairs) because 1) it will help her see the full picture (no matter how bad it looks right now) and 2) she will need it when she approaches one of the debt charities and 3) if she wants to you could post it up here for her and see what people suggest - sometimes it takes fresh eyes to see things.
Will be back in a mo. to post the link to the SOA calculator.
Edit: the link is here: http://www.makesenseofcards.com/soacalc.html
It means that you put money aside for bills that don't occur every month so when they crop up - car repair bills/ christmas etc that they don't ruin your plans.

Hi CH, we are planning to close the joint acc this week, I assume that way it wont affect me.
Hi dancingfairy, she has done a SOA but I think she could definitely do some more work on it, I think like you say the difficulty is the car repairs type bills that need to be budgeted but are paid for yearly. I will pass on your link.
She thinks Payplan looks like a good option, are they good?0
