Tesco Instore bakery reductions

Options
I went to a Tesco store this pm about 4.30 orso and there were loads of bakery products still on the shelf..these incl baguettes and those special instore bakery cakes like pecan plait and cinnamon swirls etc with todays date on em. I asked the guy working behind the bakery if they're going to be reducing them. I said 'no we dont reduce instore bakery items'; when I asked what they do with them, he said 'we throw them away'. I was pretty shock to hear this like!
I been to Sainsburys, Asda and Morrisons (not all on the same day...that would be impossible ha!) and they do reductions on instore bakery products. I've even been to another Tesco and they do reductions.

Do all Tesco's do reductions near closing time on their Instore bakery products? Or just some? Why is this?
Apoloigies for 3 qu's in one there like but rather intrigued to know!

Its up to the manager which normally depends on stock, loss and if they really care enough to dedicate staff to deal with it. Maybe best to talk to the manager instore and see? It could be that there is a decent explaination. I have witnessed this in stores before where a huge crate came along and staff were scanning things and just dumping them into the huge crate which held an industrial sized bag labelled for the bin. Was amazed also as by then a queue had gathered (I'd been waiting since 8.30pm along with others, it was 10pm by then- yes pretty desperate student!!) Apparently it wasn't worth their while financially to reduce the stock that time.

They told me they cannot spare the staff to reduce them....they still have to scan them to waste them......It really does depend on the manager.

The worst experience was some years ago in Morrisons. The member of staff was walking around with a massive clear plastic bag, dragging along the floor and filling it with joints of meat, steaks etc...
when I enquired they said it was for the bin and they didnt have time to reduce it.
I boycotted that store for quite some time, but they now reduce everything as they have had a change of management.

This is shocking!! Disregarded items are probably sent to landfill which is disgusting considering the item would probably be gratefully bought by someone in need of saving a few pennies. Surely the supermarkets should do their bit to help people/environment but as usual profits come before responsibilities!
  • Thanks for the replies, its defo given me an insight into how they do/dont do reductions! Where I live theres an Asda and a Morrisons nearby, they do great reductions!
I was referring to a Tesco Extra down south here which is where I am for a few days. Quite a chenge really! When I was at uni in Liverpool they always used ta reduce bakery products, Sunday afternoon was the best time to go because of early closing cos of Sunday Trading Hours!! (desperate student ha I was at times!)

I suppose it depends on the store but never expected them to throw the products away without even reducing them!!

i'd say they never got thrown away, i bet they made their way home with some staff
  • This thread interests me cos i used to get lots of reduced instore bakery items (cookies/doughnuts etc) but had noticed the last year or 2 i hadn't seen any. In my T they reduce longer life, pre packaged bakery stuff like bread and pancakes but not any of their own ISB. It's sad to think it all just goes in the bin, what a crazy waste.

Mind you, a few years ago I helped out on a small farm in Wales and they had a contract with a few local supermarkets and any out of date produce that wasn't sold was passed on to them for the animals. Their sheep and chickens ate all sorts, cakes and everything! I'm not defending TESCO or insinuating this happens at many stores because i'm quite sure it doesn't but maybe in more rural areas there's a few similar arrangements?
