Apps won't stop running on phone?

Hi,
My daughter has recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S2.
All her apps are always running? She can't find anywhere to turn them off. I've never had this happen on any of my phones. As soon as I've finished with one it automatically closes.
It keeps running her battery down. Even apps she's never been on, are running.
The thing she's worried about is because she can't close them, it will use up all her web allowance, as it seems to be disappearing quickly. Will it do this?
Thanks,
Candy

On my Android - bring up your apps menu, then select settings, select applications, manage applications, then running, then select the app that you want to close them select force close.
I have the same problem with my LG p500 - I only turn on wifi and 3g when i need it and never use bluetooth.
When I have used 3g or wi-fi I have to then close down my apps to save the battery. Takes a few minutes each time, but the battery lasts so much longer.0 -
There is an app: 'Advanced Task Killer' which does the job too...0

Thanks 'tubbss' I'll tell her.

On the S2 the way Android runs is clever enough to close down automatically apps that are not used but running in the background if and when it needs more memory to run foreground apps. Task killer aren't recommended on these phones as it doesn't particularly help with battery life as many of the apps will simply auto restart anyway (plenty of threads on XDA if anyone wants to have a google...). If data use is an issue, then your daughter needs to find out *what* is using it, she needs to get a data monitoring app that can show a breakdown of use by app (won't be 100% accurate but at least it gives a good indication). How are the sync options set up on her apps? If many things like Facebook, RSS feeds, news etc are all set to sync every few minutes, it will obviously use more than if set up to sync less often or manually. I've had a S2 since they were released and have had no problems with battery life or excessive data use. My data is on constantly for push emails but most of my other apps are set up to sync at intervals varying between 15 minutes to manual refresh depending on how often I want to have instant access to updates. I'll mention that my phone is rooted and that I have therefore removed a whole bunch of bloatware that I'm never going to use
, however I did run it stock for about a month after getting it and I had no battery or data issues during that time either
edit: don't know what phone she had before but she needs to realise that the S2 has a powerful dual-core processor and a big screen and these will use a fair bit of power. Now free from the incompetence of vodafail0 -

i was under the impression that using the task killer isnt needed on android as android kills tasks itself, have i misread what i read about the task killer0 -

I'll show her your post so she can read it for herself.

You're welcome

A couple more things I forgot to mention:
- signal strength can affect battery life. If she doesn't get a strong signal, the phone will use a lot more battery to keep connected, particularly when data is on. So if her signal isn't great at home for instance then she should really connect through WiFi for data, it will do wonders for her battery life (and mobile data allowance!)
- are her apps set to automatically download and install new versions from the market when available? If so, this will obviously use data. To check, go to the market, click on "my apps" then click on every installed app and see if "allow automatic update" is ticked. If she unticks this, she then can manually check for and download updates when connected to WiFi by going to "my apps" which will then show a list of available updates (if there are any obviously) right at the topNow free from the incompetence of vodafail0 -
Turn off data when not in use. seriously, this will save you money and battery life.Kate Long
