Defence contractor BAE Systems is to announce 3,000 job losses in the UK in a fresh blow to the country's manufacturing sector, according to Sky sources.
Sky's City editor Mark Kleinman said the company is set to make an announcement on the losses next week, which it will blame on a severe slowdown in core markets.
At least some of the cuts are expected to be made at BAE's facility in Warton, Lancashire, where Eurofighter Typhoons, among other military aircraft, are made.
BAE has declined to provide details of the timing, location or scale of job cuts.
It said in a statement: "BAE Systems has informed staff that we are reviewing our operations across various businesses to make sure the company is performing as effectively and efficiently as possible, both in delivering our commitments to existing customers and ensuring the company is best placed to secure future business.
"As the outcome of this review becomes clear, we will, as always, communicate to our employees as a priority."
The firm said in July that defence spending cuts in the UK and falling sales of land vehicles had hit profits.
Kleinman said: "Clearly this is yet more bad news for the British economy and for British manufacturing."

Yet more evidence that the governments cuts are too deep and being made too fast.
The private sector was supposed to expand and absorb the jobs lost in the public sector. So far all we've had is more and more job losses and virtually no growth.
Double dip here we come!
PLus, just found out Warburtons in our town is closing down, 174 jobs going there.

I wonder who would have been first in the queue to condemn news that 3,000 workers had been hired to make bombers?0

all these firms that rely primarily or solely on the public sector for its work are for all intents and purposes public sector.0

BAE Systems largest customer isn't the public sector.[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

But clearly they should be selling Typhoons to the private sector.
I believe there's a section on eBay for new and used military hardware."It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. No, they sell weapons to the likes of the Saudis, indians and other middle eastern countries.
Keeps UK children in schools and clothes though. Defence export taxes are hideous.0 -

I think the Saudis and Indians prefer to buy UK football clubs now.

Apart from the fact that cuts have barely started, the speed and extent of cuts has more to do with practical necessity than people's desire to hang onto a certain way of life. A government cannot print money indefitely to compensate for low productivity.
Government spending cuts should have implemented 10 years ago. Instead, Labour went on a reckless spending spree creating millions of unproductive jobs. They compounded our difficulties by introducing a tidal wave of legislation which has crippled UK manufacturing. If that was not enough, they also nurtured a property bubble which further increased employment costs. It is difficult to imagine how a government could have done more damage to our long term interests.
The UK has been overrun with psuedo private sector companies and monopolies. BAE is a private sector company but, like many others, owes it's existence to government subsidies and contracts. The banks, energy and transport companies have been a free reign to rip off the domestic market.
The only prospect for real private sector growth is lower taxes and wholesale scrapping of legislation. Without spending cuts, the UK will lose its AAA rating. If that happens, interest rates will take off and create mass unemployment. The legacy of Labour (its amazing how they kept getting voted in) has left us with no good options. We are faced falling living standards and rising unemployment if we make cuts or even more pain if we don't.0 -
I'm quite happy about this news.
