Hair and Makeup

Hi I'm struggling to find anyone to do my hair and makeup. I don't know where to start, I thought i'd found someone based on a recomendation but they aren't available on my wedding day. I'm looking for someone to come to my hotel. But a lot of people charge per hour and the cheapest i've found is £65.00 per hour hair and £55.00 per hour makeup. Can anyone give me a rough idea of how many hours it should take for me and 2 bridesmaids for this? I was thinking about 2 hours for hair and around the same for makeup. Is this realistic?

Have u thought about doing your own make up? alot of brides have told me they prefered to do there own or were disappointed with theres being done.go to boots tell them your getting wed and ask them for a trial, its free then u can buy the make up they used if you like it and do your own.mine will be free as the girl that does our hair normally is also a family friend and said she will do my nails and hair free, unsure about make up as im going to have a trial at boots first then buy the make up and have a go at doing my own and also get her to do it and see which i like best
  • I'm doing my own as well. There are some very good tutorials on youtube, and of course trials at boots/departments stores are very good too. I always fail miserably at resisting the hard sell when I have trials though, and end up buying everything!!!

If you do want a make up artist to come to you, it might be worth asking a few how long they normally take.

  • if you dont want to do it yourself there is always local students

dont know what area you are in but lots of them now have salons where the public can go in

so you could go in for a pamper day (it is soooooooooo much cheaper lol) and the have a hair and make up trial then ask the person afterwards if they could come and do it on the day

try to get someone who is a level 3 student
The only people I have to answer to are my beautiful babies aged 8 and 5

Do you have a regular hair dresser? The student idea is a good idea too.

I chose to do my own makeup even though I hardly wear it... I bought No. 7 makeup from Boots and practiced my wedding makeup everytime we went out! (I watched youtube tutorials for ideas)
  • I trained as a makeup artist for 3 years so think I might do my own. My SIL to be is my hairdresser so is doing my hair. However I think charging per hour might be costly. If its a qualified makeup artist I would pay £60 bride, £40/50 per person thereafter. Make sure they are qualified or have good experience. Some beauticians do makeup but have very different level of training, obviously they are trained in many other areas rather than focusing solely on makeup. Also ask what products they use, as this is generally what you are paying for apart from their skills. Bobbi brown are nice and natural for wedding makeup, if you ask at a counter they'll give you a makeover with recommendations. MAC are the only company who only employ qualified makeup artists. As for hair I would pay £35-50 for an up do. Hope this helps.
  • Where about's do you live?

I am sure there are people out there who can do it cheaper than that, that's sound's expensive to me. Have you thought about going to a local hairdresser near the hotel you are staying and seeing how much they would charge to put your's and your bridesmaid's hair up on the day? and perhaps do your own make-up?

A local hairdressers from where I am going from (House) is only charging me £15 fo on the day to do my hair and I had my hair trial on Friday just gone and that only cost me £15 as well and I loved it! Always better to shop around local hairdressers as self employed hairdressers tend to more expensive.

    Good Luck

  • I'm getting married in Gloucester an area I dont live. The hairdresser I use is over 100 miles away, so I can't ask her to come and do it. Though I would love her to. Also my idea of makeup normally is tinted vaseline as dont normally wear much :)
The other problem I have is I saw a makeup and hair person at a local wedding fair who i liked the website of and my hair and makeup was better than theirs there so am very wary.
I really wanted it done at the hotel as its a way out the town centre and i'm getting married early so didnt want too much rushing around trying to get back before the guests arrive.
Thanks for all your suggestions will look into the local colleges etc
