Remember the collapse of communism?

We all stood by and cheered when communism collapsed!

Now it's our turn, maybe, to witness the collapse of the economic system we all grew up with

Feudalism worked for a while, but was replaced

No human invention lasts for ever... there's always something better over the horizon (fingers crossed...)

I daresay both those options are 'on the cards' - the financial/political wizards of the west are currently behaving a bit like the long-gone military dictators of the east

You were the first to introduce the armageddon word!

Whether it collapses, or is replaced/altered in an orderly way is still open to question.

We still have choices and chances.

The movers and shakers of the capitalist system are rapidly moving to a position where their priority is to protect their fallback positions and escape routes (G. Osborne's comments last night were a perfect example)

If the collapse goes like the communist collapse went. then we will end up with the world's wealth concentrated into an even smaller percentage of it's population

  • Communism went against human nature and was implemented with force. These rules we keep are flawed but they are largely by our own hand and not kept by force on us.

Capitalism fits human nature far better, its the system which follows peoples desires to buy and sell for themselves. It will fail but the parts which are not supported artificially will just keep reappearing because we make that happen

Not a plan it is the nature of a free market

Every time a trade barrier is removed or a new global market opens then just like removing the groyne on a beach more of the sand can pile up at one end....Leaving a lot more of the beach with less sand.

That doesn't mean I am against free trade ..Just aware of the consequences.

How happy we will be to continue playing the game now that we are on the negative side of this fairly constant figure is the real question ?

I don't think we have ever had pure communism. Its a great idea, but it requires people to be better than most of them are, and quickly becomes corrupt.

Same with capitalism, in a truely capitalist system there is opportunity and reward with less barriers so that capable people can achieve. This has been corrupted as well, look at our system where who you know does count for more than what you know when it comes to many senior positions within many of the established professions.

People can always setup their own businesses doing something else. However in doing so they will inevitably take greater risks.

The question is how do you change it?

I am pleased that the last few posts seem to have grasped the meaning of my thread - ie that there is nothing 'god-given' about economic systems - they are all invented by the human race (most other species are content to eat grass, or eat other animals), and the only thing that is certain is that every animal, including humans, will do whatever he or she thinks is necessary in the attempt to find a satisfactory position for himself or herself

A secondary (soon to become primary) consideration is that all human societies, including their economic systems, are under an increasing threat from purely natural events - global warming/climate change. We can alter the laws of economics, but we can't alter the laws of nature
