Student loans

They seem to be imune from any kind of debt help programme.

My partner tried to defer the loan when he lost his job in 2003 however they refused this as he had no proof of income and this racked up £1600 in interest.
He was able to defer the loan when he lost his job in March 2006 however but they are still pressing him for the 1600.
They have refused a smaller repayment plan and said they want the full amount now.
He said he couldnt pay but could offer some sort of repayment plan when in work again.
To this they have responded with putting £100 a month charges on this amount.
What on earth can be done!?!
All h e gets if he rings them is shouted at.

Treat it as you would any other loan that had unacceptable conditions, ask them for a copy of the paperwork under the rules he graduated under (these change year on year in my experience with SLC). If they cannot produce these satisfactorily, or if they do not seem fair, then consider speaking to a debt counsellor or someone at CAB that can help with negotiating repayments as they would any other creditor.

  • SLC would / could not charge £1600 interest. I think you'll find this amount to be arrears.

As for deferment, what happened in the 3 years between the initial deferment attempt and finally getting deferred?
  • I'm confused  I thought student loans were only repaid when you are earning over £15,000 and taken at source from your wages??

My friend is in a similar problem with Student Loans Company. Today she's had someone phone her starting off being very aggressive, then when she asked for things in writing she got shouted at, so she terminated the call.

I'd really like some help/advice about SLC and Honours Student Loans (the same organisation?). I've been helping out my friend with sorting out finances. She's been ill over the past few years, and fell behind on lots of things. but is now in full-time employment, and most of the companies we've dealt with have been pretty good in sorting things out, the exception being student Loans, who seem to pass loans between SLC and HSL, and also get letters sent via collection agencies, so it can be very difficult to trace what the actual position is.

As I understand, if they don't get deferral paperwork (not sent, or lost in post or fell down the back of a filing cabinet or something), the loan becomes payable and can't be re-deferred, then the arrears mount up. She was/is in no position to pay a lump sum for the arrears.

The paperwork they send out isn't that clear about payments, if you have multiple loans it's quite difficult to navigate through the information, I know as I've looked through 5+ years of paperwork!.

I've also been on the phone to them over the past year or so, and found them quite difficult to deal with, they frequently didn't post information and deferral forms when requested, didn't receive the information sent back to them (I posted a deferral form myself), and tend not to be helpful on the phone, other than saying 'pay up'.

Any ideas? I do appreciate that it shouldn't have got to this stage, but it is, and but we are also trying to sort things out but getting nowhere with them.
  • I'm worried now cause I'm halfway through my first year of a four year BA which is being financed by a student loan/grant (I'm a mature student) - I really thought the money was taken at source from salary - what is a deferral? Surely if you're earning over £15,000 its just taken out pro rata to your earnings?? I'll be 46  when I graduate and almost debt free thanks to my dmp can't face hassell again. Anyone out there able to reassure me!!

When you took out the loan it should have said on the paperwork how much the monthly amount was going to be. I believe it is when you are earning over 80% of the national average that you start paying back. The amount does not vary depending on wage

Sounds exactly like the SLC to me!!!

When I was doing a training course for 18 months on no income they charged something like quadruple interest because i couldn't provide proof of income, they were completely unable to grasp that i didn't have one even though i was able to prove it. Absolute scum.
