Then it seems to me, unless he can be found a job he can do, the ball is in your court. Get a second opinion on his condition. but I would ask for the operation anyway. He will be in pain w/o it and it will only get worse.

thats the thing though, if he gets the wieght off his legs for a few days, and doesnt try walking miles, hes in considerably less pain.

The actual thing is, how to correct it.

A pension now, won't correct his problem. It might be managed for a while, but not forever and could get worse. the pain he is in won't go away until the condition is taken more seriously.

What can't be measured is feelings of self worth. Which tend to be higher if working if and when you can- some actually resist retiring early or being on benefits and you need to take this into acct. So youneed to weigh up all options. But I do think the facts will be on your side for early retirement if you get a second opinion, and if they can't transfer him to a job he can do. In which case, they will Have to pay him early medical retirement.

If I had the choice to fight for an op I needed and stay in work- that is what I would choose.
  • trouble is my Mum is also ill, to the point she had to stop working about 15 years ago. so i think they just want to have some reasonable years before there too ill. to give an example, my Mum can no longer read or watch TV due to her illness, that affected her eyes to the extent she needed urgent laser surgery to prevent her going blind.

p.s. she has not claimed any benefits due to her illness. before someone starts assuming my parents are spongers.

no love I don't think they are spongers more likely they are not claiming what they should be. Has your mum not been claiming anything at all for her eyesight surely she could get dla for that? How an earth have they been managing I mean caretaker's pay can't be that good, aw bless them hope you get it sorted for them. On another note my bro had both his knees done he's 53 and it has given him a new lease of life he's back in work driving a huge artic low loader best thing he ever did had one done first then the other he's like a spring chicken honest good luck anyway m'dear hope things sort out for you all.Feel very sorry for your poor mum and dad .They are the ppl the dla should be paying out for esp after working all their lives not like some ppl who don't pay a penny into the pot and take take take.

I agree with suki- theyaren't spongers, but your mother is due things she Hasn't been claiming. you need to get her to contact her local benefits office asap.

And Suki made my point for me. Yes, he could retire on medical grounds, but I really feel He will be better off with the surgery. And if your mother is getting what she is entitled to, they wil be better off.
  • my mother has a sceleraderma, not sure thats the right spelling. it a nasty !!!!!! that decides to attack different parts of the body at different times in her life. one thing they have discovered is that any stressful situations can trigger very bad attacks, which sometimes leave her hospitalized. so this is main reason they havent been to social services, as she dosent want to be put through lots of interviews and tests.
