Delays to exchange

So I'm in a chain, all are ready to exchange (all but one using an online conveyancer, the one who pushed for the week we are now aiming to, but that's another story).

I was clear from the start that I wanted 2 weeks between exchange and completion for security and to allow transfer of utilities etc. Things seem out of my control however (that said if we don't exchange soon I'm going to put completion back, haven't done so far as the rest of the chain want to hold in there.)

Anyway removal company happy provisionally booked. What do people do about phone/broadband/etc etc. Some people exchange and complete on the same day so do they just cancel last minute or trust all goes well and crack on with making arrangements as if all will proceed to plan? It feels strange requesting transfer of the phone for example when not exchanged (because technically all can go wrong).

All advice appreciated. Of course if everyone behaved responsibly and kept true to their word we'd all exchange in plenty of time. Oh hum...

I would be happy with a week between exchange and completion for transfer of utilities etc - you don't need to tell most of them until a few days before you move out, if at all before you move out. You could double check the position for each one to be sure though. I found that the phone / broadband took some weeks to sort out, even with the right notice, just because that's the way it is ...

I would not shorten it below a week for personal peace of mind, and I certainly would not be prepared to do exchange and completion on the same day. Others on here have done it OK, but a colleague of mine did it last week and did not exchange until 445pm because of last minute land registry stuff that took longer to resolve than anticipated.
