    "The country spends more on benfits than it takes in income tax." Source? Can you explain why this is a problem?

    Are you for real? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
  • but it is not one area is it. what the govt pays out is more than it brings in. that is the reason for the deficit. yes, there are plenty of different types of taxes but benefits should never be greater than income tax. if you can't see that, you have no hope. tell me, do you vote labour per chance?

    TWH - too young to vote, I think, judging by the lack of common sense.

    Sure, it seems a rather strange stance so wondering if he can support it in any way.

    Well thanks for coming into the thread to post about how you won't contribute!

    Afraid I'm going to need some help with googling as this [institute for fiscal studies] indicates total benefit expenditure in 2009-10 of £188bn vs Income Tax & NI receipts of ~£229bn [HMRC]. Am I looking at incorrect or invalid figures? Still unclear as to why this is necessarily problematic!

    It's a problem in a lot of ways. Income is less than total expenditure. I'm sure you don't need an explanation as to why that's problematic?

    As for income tax and benefits.....on a social level, this is a big problem, as it dissincentivises work, especially when people think that basically their entire income tax for the year won't even cover the benefits bill. For society, it problematic as it suggests there is an underlying problem in the country.
