Clover is currently £2.00 and Buy 1 Get 1 Free in Tesco and if you look on the coupon thread there's a coupon for 30p off - you can use two coupons as you are purchasing two lots so you will get two tubs for £1.40

    Ugh! Clover isn't butter.

The cost of butter is a popular topic on here, but fair enough, it's something many people buy every week. However, I think its popularity is going down, there's so much less butter in the average supermarket now and the spreads are taking over the market.

Anyway, I still think butter is good value for money compared to spread, I prefer the taste by a huge amount and find a little goes a long way, much further than spread does. It's also still the best thing I've found for greasing trays so food doesn't stick when baking.

However, I do use less of it and get out the plastic spatula to really get the last out the butter dish now as it's expensive stuff :(

Willow is not butter it's vegetable fat based spread hence the reason it is significantly cheaper than butter.
Butter is made from cream either with or without a bit of salt added & is as a result expensive to produce. Margarine, spreads etc... are made of low value ingredients such as vegetable oil & water often combined with a few other ingredients that are supposed to be good for you so the manufacturers can make claims about health benefits hence the lower prices.

It's bordering on the criminal how some of these butter substitutes are marketed. I've often suspected that unwary shoppers are being conned and some of the posts I've seen on this forum over the past few months have borne that out.

Mind you, why people can't taste the difference between real butter and these processed, deodorized, highly refined vegetable oil fakes is a puzzle, too.

how much has butter gone through the roof!

a few months back lidl had their own butter at 1.59 for 500g then it was 1.79, last time i checked it was 1.99

sainsburys has always been about the £2 mark, tonight when i went to get some it was upto £2.30, even their basics curry sauce was only 9p last week, now 19p!!!

I was going to mention Lidl'sbutter but then noticed what you've poited out here. Pity about the price though as their butter appears to score quite high in taste tests. Even olive spread which I currently buy has shot up in price recently, ASDA £1.95, Tesco £2.25.

You might want to considered shopping in bulk and freezing it as some appear to suggest?

Try searching HotUKDeals & mySupermarket from time to time to check if there are any decent offers.
