Ideas needed for indoor beach party

Options
My son's birthday is looming - he'll be ten. We're going to offer him the choice of taking a few friends bowling and then maccy d's or having an indoor beach party and inviting everyone he knows. I think he'll go for the latter. Getting a room's no problem but what activities to offer? Thought about a big sand pit, limbo dancing, volley ball followed by a picnic (all indoors).

Anyone got any inspiring ideas - definitely no water, it's going to be a drought hit beach!!

Here are some that I have used previously, but in the garden so depends on your venue.

    The Venue
A great big cardboard yellow sun hanging down from the ceiling

Flying Seagulls on strings hanging from the ceiling

Have as many deck chairs as you can get hold of and hang beach towels and swim suits up in appropriate places.

    The Guests
Swim suits would be good, but as it is freezing the best idea would be a combination of swim suits with beach clothes such as old shirts etc over the top.
For boys Hawaiian shirts and faded shorts are also cool. For girls skirts and shorts with "beachy" type t shirts are easy.
Everyone should wear sun hats, sunglasses and flip flops or deck shoes.e after all "it is so hot!"
Ask everyone to bring a beach towel.

    The Games

    Musical Towels

Every child lays out their beach towel in two lines in the middle of the floor.
As the music plays the kids dance around them . But when the music stops they have to jump on any towel and lie down in a sunbathing type pose.
After a couple of practices remove a towel each time. The child who fails to secure a sunbathing spot next time the music stops is out. Continue until you arrive at a winner.

    Cool Shades Contest:
Have each child come wearing their favourite pair of sunglasses. Give prizes for the funniest, the coolest, etc.

    Surfin' Safari:
Place a skim board or sturdy boogie board on top of a dumb-bell weight. Have the kids take turns "surfing" on the board to beach music. If you want, give prizes for the best wipeout, who surfed the longest, most creative surfer, etc.

    Hula Contest
Self explanatory - if you want, give prizes for the longest hula

    Food

Depends on venue, but maybe hot dogs and burgers or if cold food, new beach buckets filled with salad and small spades as serving tools. Other foods made to look like fish, boats and so on
  • End of Primary school dance was a beach party in June instead of a prom
Children had to come in beach outfits mainly surf shorts and wacky t- shirts
    There were inflatable palm trees
They played a limbo game and volley ball with balloons
And they prizes were silly hats, grass skirts and Luau ( the flowers around the neck)

    They had a great time
    Enjoy

Another fun game is to have a big box of dress up items - things like hawaiian shirts, rubber rings, snorkels, flippers, grass skirts etc. Put the guests in groups and have a nominated person from each group. Everyone else has to dress them up using the items with a prize for the best/silliest outfit.
