S.A.D discussion and support thread

Having posted a S.A.D light in the grabbit now forum...I couldnt help but notice that it provoked quite a passionate response! I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread here where sufferers can share experiences and tips on keeping the blues at bay.

I've always suffered during the winter, but my last 2 (since I've been single) have been really bad. I have to force myself to go anywhere and would quite happily hibernate til may :(. Anyhoo, I've just bought my new lamp and am determined to stay on an even keel this year!

Can I ask for your personal experience on this lamp? Like how does it help you - is it just for night or is it day .. ie can you elaborate? Does the dr say you have SAD? as opposed to someone just saying they have it themselves?

This sounds like a total probe but am really interested. Thanks x
  • I got my Phillips Golite lamp from a BzzAgent campaign earlier this year - sadly got it end February so was a bit late for me to actually get the full effects, so I intend to see how it works this year.

I suffer with depression on and off anyway, but winter is always worse for me - especially being single as it's harder to deal with when you're alone.

I'm also currently on Anti Depressants which I'm aiming to come off March - April next year. Will be interesting to see how others get on with the lamps too.
  • I'll watch this with interest - thank you. Was semi-diagnosed this spring, although because it was getting light the doc wasn't sure, so am keeping an eye out for how I'm feeling and what steps I can take to keep my pecker up this winter.

My birthday is early November and though I am truly not bothered about getting older, I noticed that around that time I always got a bit depressed. I really couldn't understand this .
Last year I realised that the clocks go back a week before my birthday - so going to work and home in the dark, not seeing daylight for 5 out of 7 days.... This year I plan to make sure I spend some time outside each day, even when the weather's poor, by having a walk round at lunchtime instead of sitting at my desk, getting out at the weekend and making sure I look after myself a bit better generally (better diet, dealing with ever present work stress etc). I hope that this might be enough to keep me on an even keel over Winter. And of course, looking forward to the best day of the year - the first day I come home in daylight in the Spring!

Never been diagnosed but from the clocks going back my mood just slides. I find post-Christmas to about March are awful - i suppose because there isn't really anything to look forward to for months after the festive period. I hate being like this because it isn't 'me' - as a person I am really cheerful, positive and full of life. I've found the last 2 years very hard going what with the dark nights, the cold, the snow, the ice...all of which made it much more difficult to get out. I've just started with the light box, so only time will tell. I'll keep reporting back to let you know what I think.

Am not 'me' just now and it totally sucks. Hope it works for you.
