Silver plate costume jewellery?

I have a couple of nice rings which I took to jewellers to see if they could dip in silver but they told me that it would wreck rings completely.
I have just googled silver plating and seen several plating solution kits for sale - they vary in price from £10-£20 plus postage - just wondered if anyone can recommend any.
I would rather pay £20 for something that works than £10 for something that's cheaper and doesn't!
